Default 99 xpedition 425. winch rewire question

I just replaced my old (and cooked) Warn 2000 winch (yeah, the promo one) with a 2500 Gorilla. Do I need to rip out all the old wiring (from the winch back or can I use the same ones (the Pos and Neg)?) I realize that some of it has to be changed but it appears as though the wire is the same gauge. This would DEF. cut the install time down...

ALSO.. The old winch just stopped. Quick fix or major surgery ? I would like to put it on my older rig.

Thanks

the differnce between the 2000 and the 2500 is the wiring and the contacter. the wiring is heavier for the bigger winch and if its a newer one then the contacter set up is totally differnt.

The new gorilla probably has the 4 poster solenoid. The forward and reverse to the switch is low current and the solenoid handles the high current switching. The old 2000 (had the same on my Expedition) has the old style can solenoid and the big grey round high current switch. I recommend replacing it with the supplied gorilla wiring. The two won't be compatible and you will need the old setup to put the old unit on another bike. My .02

as far as the wiring goes, you'll have to re-wire, like what has been said.

with repairing the winch, it could be an easy fix, it all depends on what is wrong. tear it down and inspect it.
did the solenoid click or anything when you tried winching? or did any of it make noise? it could be as simple as a bad solenoid.

no noise at all. just completely dead. It could be a bad ground etc possibly too.. It was a good excuse (for the wife) to get a new one too . If you have any thoughts I would be happy to listen.....

unless you want to spend the money i'ld try to find out if its just a bad connection. those big grey switches sometimes went bad as well. they also had a recall on some on the early solenoides. they were a fire hazard. like i said, the only diff, between the old 2000, and the newer 2500 is the wiring and soleniode. there is a wiring up grade that warn sells, but its like 150.00.

cool, thanks.....I decided that I will trouble shoot the warn and then put it on the Kodiak as that is already set up for it..I put the Gorilla on tonight.. SWEET fit..Though I had bought the mount, it was not needed. The 2500 Gorilla was a perfect match. the only thing I used diffently was the bolts that mount the winch to the plate (4). I used the old fairlead and mounting plate and bolts I as have read that the Gorilla ones are not as rugged.. NO mods, it literally was a swap. Now I have to rewire. The wire gauge from the winch to the breaker is 6 ga. I left it there as that is what the gorilla came with (for that application). I will use the rest of the supplied gorilla wiring and breaker (solenoid) to finsh the job from there.

Do you know what the wire upgrade was? I assume a heavier gauge wire and a new style solenoid which I should be able to get (the solenoid). The wire I will get a an auto shop.
