maxxis sure trak?? or bear claws?
#1
i have a scrambler 400. thinking baout putting douglas .190 rims on. i see that rocky mountain atv has maxxis sure traks that will fit a scrambler. i wanted bear claws but since rocky mountain has the wheel kits, i would rather buy them all together, tires and rims.
has anyone used the sure traks? i do alot of trail riding, loose coal hills, some mud, snow. how do they wear?
...or should i go with the bear claws, and just buy the tires and rims separately? the other weay will definitely be cheaper. around $400 for the whole deal.

I don't have any experiance with buying tires cause mine came with my quad. However, I do have Bearclaws and so does my buddy. We love them, and have no complaints. Just figured I could help ya a tiny bit.

I'm running Bear Claws on my 400 too. I love them. I think the Sur Traks are 2 ply, and the Bear Claws 4 ply. I may be wrong. The tread pattern is nearly identical. As much as I like my BearClaws, I'd have to say for $400, go for it. I was going to get Sur Traks right up until my dealer cut me a great deal on the claws because someone ordered them and changed their mind.

Although I am not positive, I very much doubt that the Sur Trak's are 2 ply. Most 2 ply constructed tires are MX stlye (something really soft and grippy). I highly doubt that an all-terrain/mud tire would be constructed of only a 2-ply material. I am looking to run the Razrs up front and the Sur Trak's on the rear during muddy/snowy/sloppy condition and swaping out the Traks for Razr's on the rear on drier/hotter days.
Good luck,
RMATV does have the best prices

My assumption was incorrect.
After reviewing the Maxxis site, I found that more than just one set of aggressive tire was only available in 2 ply. I was really giving the Sur Trak some thought, but I refuse to buy a tire w/ a lesser ply rating than 4. I say go for the claws, or choose something else. I will probably choose something else b/c RMATV does not carry claws and I dont think I could find a better deal anywhere else.
Good luck,
EC

Just thought I would jump in here with my two bits. I have the Sur-Traks on my 400 Scram and I love them. I have a hard time believing there is any noticable difference between the Sur-Traks and the Bear Claws since the tread pattern is nearly identical. As far as the ply rating goes, they say they are two ply but the two plies HAVE to be twice as thick as normal plies, I don't know how else to explain why the sidewalls are so nice and stiff. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but arent the stock Titans supposed to be 4 ply? Funny thing is if you told me the Titans were 2-ply and the Sur-Traks were 6-ply I would believe you. The Sur-Traks are THAT much thicker and stiffer than the Titans.
I had a problem with my stock tire and rim setup, every time I got near a rock I would get a huge nasty dent in the rim. When I got my Sur-Traks I got them with an 8 inch rim instead of the stock 10 inch. Now when I ride I can ride faster over the rocky sections and have yet to put so much as a nick in either one of my rims.
Bottom line is, yeah I know the Sure-Traks are only supposed to be 2-ply but it looks like you can't just go by the ply rating to determine the sidewall stiffness and durability of a given tire.
BTW I love these tires, run them backwards in the sand or snow and they hook up almost as well as V-paddles. Run them in the other direction and they are awesome in the trails and mud. The side-biter treads on the edges of them have helped me out of some sticky situations on near vertical hill climbs with deep ruts. I am thinking about trying a set on my Raptor, only down side to them is they don't slide as predictable as stock tires.
Hope this made some sort of sense and helped.

Well, I guess I am a MaXXiS man.
You say that the Sur Trak's dont slide as predictably as the stock titans? Do you think the All Traks would slide better and still perform closly to the Sur Traks in snowy, muddy conditions?
Here in NC, we hardly ever get over 6" of snow, And I dont go "looking" for mud, I just want a tire that will handle mud decently w/out pulling from the "performance" ride. I will also be ordering Razrs for the rear as well as either the All or Sur Traks so I can interchange pending the weather conditions.
So my questions is Sur Traks? or All Traks?
Thanks,
EC

Quadbuster.
If you are getting the Razrs I would personally go for the more aggressive Sur-Trak. When I say that they don't slide as predictably that is on dry harder surfaces (you would have your Razrs on for these conditions anyways). When you have the 'Traks on, overall traction is at more of a premium than the ability to slide them out on sweeping turns. They will still slide, they just have so much traction and big side-biters that they tend to stay hooked up.
So I guess my suggestion would be:
If you could only afford one set and wanted one all around tire get the All-Traks
If you can get two sets, the Razrs and Sur-Traks would give you the best of both worlds that you could swap back and forth depending on the conditions.
I myself plan to get a set of the Razrs for the Scram in the Spring when everything here gets thawed out and we have our hardpacked trails back.
PS I love RMATV they are only 2 hours south of me so I get everything overnight with ground shipping.
