Default Is this worth fixing?

I was given a 91 Polaris 350 Trail boss 4x4 today. When I went to pick it up I discovered why it was free. It is completly in peices. I was told everything works fine but the water pump housing has a crack in it and is allowing water to mix with the oil which has caused the bearings to go bad. I know I did't get all the nuts and bolts, there just aren't enough in the pile I have to get it back together, not to mention any other parts I might be missing.

I've worked on cars alot and have done some work on lawn mowers so I know I can handle this, at least I could have if I was the one who took it apart. It did come with what looks to be a pretty good service manual PN 9912004 but in reading it I still have a lot of questions as to what is what. I mean I have a pile of parts I really don't know what they are. Surely with some help from this site I can overcome that.

I know at the least I need to rebuild the engine. The hand brake slowed and almost stopped it coming off the trailer but there is little left but frame, supension, trans, and axles and no me. I have seen one wire that apears to be cut (might be normal) This thing has been sitting disassembled in an old pole barn for who know how long so there is no telling the condition of the clutch or anything else. I do know I have alot of cleaning to get rid of all the bird feathers and other junk that has built up on it.

It's a big project. Would it just be better to buy one from ebay?

It may well be worth fixing --- IF --- you want it . I have a 350 engine I am not going to use maybe we can get together and do something .

You'd be better off selling the parts that are still usable on ebay or craigslist and getting something in better shape. Replacing all the bad stuff will cost you more than a good used atv.

I think if i could find a reasonable price on another engine that might be the way to go. It would give me a good reference point, I would have this one for spair parts, and if it came ready to drop in then it would take alot of guess work out of fixing the one I have. As far as I know that might be all that is wrong with it. I also did some more looking on ebay and these things are bringing more then the $700 I saw at first. Realy the only thing I'll use it for is running around the pits on race night, so it doesn't have to be great.

For just a pit machine, you'd be wasting your time and money. Something that far gone will soak up so many nickle and dimes. That's just my 2 cents.

Here, I'll help you make your decision. Make a list of all the things you know you'll need to replace. Include in that list the things you think you might need to replace. Then go to this web site Partsland and look up those parts and their cost. You'll be able to decide if it's worth fixing to you. Of course many parts can be bought used, so you can deduct that amount. Many parts you won't want to buy used so keep those parts retail. This should tell you where your at in wether it's worth fixing.

I took the cover that was elledgedly cracke causing th leak to the Polaris place to get a second opinion. I had looked a little closer at the engine and discovered the only way water could get in where I was told the problem was would be from forging a large body of water. I took the inner water pump cover off and sure enough that seal was shot. Whith this new knowledge I talked to a service tech and he confirmed my suspisions. The only thing it needs is seals and some bearings. I tore the motor down as far as I could last night and so far everything look fine and just needs some cleaning. I'm gonna have to easy out a couple screws on the oil pump and then I need to fab up a counter ballance puller. When I get it apart I can make a list and a desission.
