2003 Trailboss 330 electrical problems
#1
Well like I stated I have a 2003 trailboss 330 and I am having several problems. I don't know if they are linked or seperate. I do have the service manual but it doesn't do much justice for helping me out. Well to start out the starter will not turn over. I tried to bipass the magnito switch and send power directly to the starter and nothing happened. I do hear a clinking noise at the magnito when I try to start it. Very faint. I also tried to apply 12volts directly to the starter to try that but nothing. Voltage coming through the magnito switch was very minimal. Don't remember what it was though. It will pull start fine for now though. My second problem is that when I turn on the lights the quad will start running rough, backfire sometimes or turn off. The lights will be on bright at idle but as soon as you rev the engine the lights go dim or out. I have gone through my electrical connections and cleaned them and applied dielectric grease to help protect them. Still hasn't helped. Something else that it is doing that might help is that when you put it in reverse there is no limiter. Just like I am pushing in the button but I am not. Don't know if that helps. Please let me know what you guys think. I am hoping to avoid the shop and spend my hard earned money. I have called around and stopped in and asked a couple techs but they were baffled with it.
Thanks
Greg

Read up in your manual on the E.C.M. electronic control module..........Or P.D.M.....Power Distribution Module............These control "ALOT" of stuff on my Sportsamn's 450"s and mine would kill the engine also when my headlights were turned on!!!!!!My also controls the voltage regulator and retafier...................................Do some more reading on this with your model and ask some question with your dealer....If they will try and help you....My did via e-mail.......And I had a second 450 here to try the part...........Good luck keep us posted!!!!!!........Caper.....

My manual did little help for me. I will try asking around about those modules to see what they think. Is there any way to test them to see if that is it besides replacing one for one? Thanks for your input.

well i checked the part nos# and they're differnt from what is on the 450's like capers bike so i dont know if that would be your problem or not. i beleave he found a way to test his from the manual but dont quote me for sure.

No there is no way to really test them in the manual.............The dealer just told me to swap the one from the other 450 and try it............He didn't even tell me how to check the bad one...........It was fully sealed unit........So there is no servicable parts inside anyway!!!!!!!!...The new one I did notice has screws on one side..........Never took it off though!!!.......Caper...........
You said your manual is no help for you!!!.....Does it tell you what your E.C.M.(PDM) controls?????

I had a 2003, and a 2004 trailboss, the 2003 had the same exact problems that you are experiencing and it was the battery. It was shorted internally and caused all those problems. When the 2004 battery needed replaced it would not pull start or run period until a new battery was installed.

I know my battery is on its way out so maybe I will try that first. I will read the manual again but I don't remember it saying much about the ECM or anything. It doesn't even have wiring diagrams. I had to get pictures off the internet parts manual to see what the different parts were. Thanks for the help guys.

Thanks Speedy63 that was the problem. I would have never have thought that a bad battery would have caused all those issues. I just got a new battery and connected it and it cranked right over and the lights worked great even under rpm. I am so excited to go ride tomorrow. I was afraid to go far from the truck before. Thanks again.
