Eratic idle after rebuild
#1
After rebuilding my polaris 400 2-stroke its idling WAY TOO HIGH as it will probably blow up if not shut off.
Is it the idle screw that is out of adjustment or something else?
Where is the idle screw located on the carberutor?

did you make sure the slide in the carb isnt hanging up? you should turn the idle screw all the way out and adjust the slide first so its all the way down and then adjust the idle. whats the air screw set at?

No i did not do that, can you tell me how to do that?
I dont know where the idle screw is located or the air screw located. There is a big screw on the side of the carberutor with a spring on it. I didnt want to start turning it and lean it out on a fresh rebuild.
When ever I hit the throttle I can feel the slide in the carb like grinding or moving slowly.

you could have some dirt, or crud in the slide, that not letting it retract, or you cable might be sticking, also, the screw on the side of the carb with the spring in it is the, idle adjustment.... turn it out to lower idle, in to raise idle.

take note of how many turns your air screw is. its the small screw on the side. it usually a reg head screw. screw it in until it bottoms out(gentally do not force it) and count the turns so you wil know where to set it.

Ok I took apart the carb cleaned it out real good and all put it back together and took the idle screw all the out and its still doing the same thing actually it dosent even make a difference where the idle screw is it always stays the same, if I pull the choke all the way it idles down a good bit but stil wont go in gear. Also it will bog under load is there something wrong with my carb? When I went to put the ATV back together my cousin already had it apart and the carb was torn apart could it be missing a vital piece?
Matt, im not really sure what was wrong with it because it is actually my grandpa's 4wheeler and my cousin tore it down but he never finished putting it back together he just took it apart and left it. I had the cylinder bored .5mm over with a new oversize piston and rings and of course cometic gaskets, new wrist pin, new top end needle bearing and think thats it.
