Polaris RZR (my thoughts after test)
#1
My boss just got a RZR and we took it out to Lake Potawatami in Fulton Missouri, over the weekend.
There were three of us: Two Sportsman 500s (one HO one not) and the RZR. My ride is the 500 non-HO.
Started out just running around and got to the more technical stuff as the day went by.
All I can say is wow. This thing is impressive. It went everywhere that we went on the Sportsmen. It may have had to backup to make a few turns, but that was it. It had power to do anything. We did a bit of rock climbing, steep hills up/down, mud (clay) holes and flat out speeding and it just kept going.
I managed to lay it on its side when attempting a spin at 30 MPH, it did a great job of protecting me. It did get damaged a bit on this folly, but nothing horrible. We did find that a helmet should be worn at all times in this vehicle as I would have had a nasty head wound if not wearing one. The seat belt anchor left a nice scratch on my helmet.
Observations of the driver:
He found the driver's side netting a bit close when turning the wheel, kept catching his arms/hands when going past the netting. When going up really steep hills, when getting to the top you have no visibility of the other side, due to the front hood. In tight technical turns don't give it too much gas or the front tires lift and the RZR won't turn.
The 800cc (765cc) has more than enough power, if anything it needs better traction from a bit wider/taller tires (his was bone stock). At 30 MPH you can hit it and the rear will break loose.
Overall a very well thought out off-road go-kart on steroids.

P.S. I did not get fired for wrecking the bosses new toy, just said that is what this thing is for. Good thing as I am sure replacement parts are non-existant right now.

I need a green one. maybe this fall..
Is the steering noticable more difficult in awd? or about the same?

I did not notice any difference in the steering when in AWD or 2WD. It will spin all 4 wheels at 20-30 when you floor it in AWD or only 2 in 2WD. Seat belt held me in and it required two hands to undue when on its side. I thought for sure a 5-point harness would be needed, but maybe not. It has more than enough power playing on flat ground with two adults (~200 lbs each) in the RZR. We only had one adult in it on the technical playground, one would have to have a lot of trust in the driver :-O
I can see a whole new class of dirt track racing coming soon. I would even go so far as to say if one existed close enough to me, that I would participate. It was so much fun to take on a small oval and get the slide going.

I wonder how a rzr would do with sompin like RZR IIs on all 4 wheels. would the 22" take too much of the speed away?
