2004 600 sp lacks power
#1
Hi guys,
I just bought a used 2004 sp in great cond (1500 miles), Today I drag raced with my dad and his stock 2002 sportsman 500. We stayed neck to neck from 0 to 60 mph.
My 600 has a dalton clutch kit in it. Checked clutches and belt and everything was in good cond.
Has anyone played with jetting, exhaust?
A few years ago, a buddy of mine had a 600 and performance was pretty close to my 99 500 scrambler. I had him on accel but he would pass me on top speed.
I know my 600 should have more in it but what?
Thanks,
Mike

do you have oversize tires on the 600? what did the kit consit of. is the secondary spring been reset to another setting if its the reg.non roller clutch. the main reason they stopped making the 600 was because the 500 efi has almost as much power as the dealer told me. just a thought.

My 600 has 25" mud bug tires, Clutch is EBS and primary clutch has the dalton spring and the secondary is stock as recommened by dalton for 25" They recommend changing the secondary spring if increasing tire size.
As for power my scrambler is way more powerful then my 600 and my buddies 600 was close so I know the problem is my 600. I actually wish I had the stock springs to start from zero to see the difference.

With jetting, first you will need to know how you stand now. Simply putting in a bigger jet is not going to do much for you, it may in fact make you too rich which would give you a flat spot at the top part of the rpm and also may even have a slight bog.
Other than a sparkplug check or even a plug chop, a quick way to find out is to run a WOT and choke it a little, if it runs better then you are lean and need a bigger jet... also at WOT quickly decrease the throttle to 7/8 and if it improves then you are rich and either have to put a smaller jet in or you need to increase the air flow with 'air-jetting'
I did a post in the Arctic Cat forum on 'air-jetting' to get more HP for about $3.00, HP to the point that you can really feel the difference, no flat spotting, and pull from 0 to the limiter without glitch.

From doing searches in this and other sites a few things were mentioned.
-someone mentioned that there was some kind of recall or campain changing the main jet from 155 to 157 (maybe more?) on the 2004 models???
-Also to check the plastic lock nut in primary clutch, if nut loosens it prevents the clutch from fully closing causing lack of power and top speed.
Not saying this will solve my problem but is certainly worth looking into.
