Default 500vs800 tracks and fuel

Hello all!

I am buying a new quad for running around with the boys on the weekends. It will also be used a lot for work. I have it narrowed down to a 500 Deluxe EFI or an 800 Deluxe EFI. I'm looking at about $1,100 more for the 800 (CDN).

Anyway, have a couple of questions that I couldn't find in any archives

1) I plan on running tracks on the unit in the winters and am wondering if the 500 is enough to handle it? For sure the 500 would be enough for me in the summers, but I don't know about the tracks in the winter.

2) Fuel consumption: my buddy went from a 500 AC to a 700 AC fuelly and actualy got better fuel milage. Can the same be said for the 500 popo vs 800? It will be used on mixed trails with a LOT of mudriding.

3)Is there any major problems with either of these options that I should about before dropping 10G's on one? I've read a lot of forums and heard concerns with weight, boots and belts. Anything else? I've read an awful lot of Polaris bashing on various forums but always from people who don't own them. Can some actualy 500 and 800 owners tell me what they think?

Thanks in advance. I don't want to make the wrong decision .

i think you would need alot more lowrange use w/ the 500 vs the 800 w/ the tracks. the 800 is alot harder on gas then the 500 and the twins tend to run hotter as well. keep the radiator clean and its not a problem. from what ive been told you loose alot of top speed w/ the tracks as well, whick im sure isnt a big deal, but the power differnce on low end is night and day between the 5 and 800. just my .02

I have a 2006 camo sportsman 800. I think that you will find that there is a pretty big difference in fuel mileage between the two you are looking at, but when it comes to power, I think it is well worth it. Mine is all stock and i get about 60 miles out of a tank. I haven't had any problems with mine yet, but all of the major brands out there have some issues. When it comes to the tracks, i dont know much about them, so i'll let somebody else talk about that. Good luck with whatever you choose.

So 15sh MPG? Wow. My 650AC gets 20 and I thought that was rough. For me fuel is kind of a big deal because it will get tons of miles put on it.

On that subject does anyone know what the 700 carb versrions were like for fuel? That is another route for me to go (good used one here in town)

if fuel is a big reason then the 500efi would be a way to go unless you plan on alot of riding w/ the tracts then i dont think it would make much differnce.

My 2002 SP700 and can go 90 miles on a tank of fuel. That would be running at 20 to 30 MPH.

I would definitely say go with the 800. If you get the 500 I can hear it now. "I should have gone with the 800" Just get it and plan on a little more gas. I am pretty sure I can get 100 miles on a tank with my 07 800X2 Deluxe. The 500 just does not have the power I need. Good luck.

yea but the x2 has a bigger tank where i have a 4.13 gallon one. if you rode it decent w/ it being stock i beleave you could get 17 to18 mpg if you dont play w/ it. but the minute you hit the throttle and play you'll drop down to 10 easy enoguh.

I will definately be "hitting the throttle" with it. If a 700 can get 90 miles on a tank, hitting it or not, I'll be happy with that for sure. Thanks for the help guys.
