Need an ATV (newbie)
#1
Hello all, my dad and I need some recomnendations on an ATV. First off, for the use. My dad own's an auto shop and he would like to use the ATV for pushing cars in/out of the shop and for use in the winter to plow some snow around the shop. Also, since we are into dirt track racing, using the ATV for hauling wheels/tires, etc. The only trail riding it will see is when i'm able to steal it away from him My question is, what ATV would u recommend for this type of use? Would a 4x4 be necessary? His budget would prolly be ~$4500. He likes the look of the Polaris Hawkeye. Its only a 300, but would that be sufficient? We were offered a sale on a 2002 Honda Rancher 4x2 with a new 350cc motor for $2,000. What do you all suggest? Thanks!

I would suggest getting something with a low range if you are going to pull or push cars around. The hawkeye is a great machine from what I have heard, but it doen't have a low range. As far as needing 4wd, I am always a fan of getting it as you never know when you might need it, but for what you mentioned, you might not need it at all. Just a personal prefference based on your description of how you will be using the quad for. The sp450 would be the next quad from polaris and it has all the features of all the sportsman models as well as low range. This quad would do great for what you mentioned. But I think the price is going to be about $5500 which is about $1000 more than you are wanting to spend. With that being said, you might want to check on the following quads. they all have low range and 4wd option if you want it.
kawasaki prairie 360 4x4: automatic with low range and cost about $4800 OTD
suzuki eiger 400 4x4: automatic or manual with low range and cost about $5100 OTD
yamaha big bear 400 4x4: manual with 5 speed tranny and first gear is a granny gear and cost about $4900 OTD
arctic cat 400 4x4: automatic or manual with low range and cost about $5300 depending on which you get
honda: hondas tend to cost more and if you get one, get one with a manual trannie because their automatics don't have low ranges. Look at the rancher 350 4x4 manual for about $5200.
As far as the 2002 honda rancher 4x2 with a new motor for $2000, that sounds ok and it should be a manual either ESP or foot shifting, but either way the gearing is the same.

we have a local guy that pushes cars @ his garage and pushes show w/ a magum and done it for years w/ good luck. has to be a awd though for plowing. just make sure it has lowrange in you need to push alot of weight.

hawkeye has a low range if you ride one you will know what i mean it would do what you want as long as you dont try to pull them real fast. with that said the sportsman 450 would do it better..i think you should be able to pick one up for about $4800
