Default oil in air box?

I jus tgot today a new to me 2006 scrambler 500. I got it home and it started and ran great. I was checking everything out and I noticed there was oil in the bottom of the breather box. I than checked the oil and noticed it was milky at the top of the dip stick. The oil looked okay but I will check again in the morning. Is this normal or do I have problems?

Depends on how much oil. Is it an inch deep or so? Or is it just a light coating. If it has been rolled it can fill the air box up. It could be from the crankcase vent too. If you just got it I would change the engine oil, clean the air box, and keep an eye on it. I wouldn't worry about the foam yet. If the oil looks good after changing it and riding it then I would think you will be ok.

Probably a half inch. Not water in the air box. oil is over full according to dip stick.

Does the oil smell like its contaminated with fuel? If its overfull it could very well be from the crankcase vent. Change it and keep an eye on it.

That milky white stuff was foam? water in oil can make it white if its not foam. and is the air cleaner a k&N filter? sometimes too much oil on filter will leave fluid on bottom of airbox. but it would look pink kinda like transmission fluid.

No it is not a k&n filter. The oil in the air box was less than a half inch. The filter cover was very dirty. I guess I need to get a manual and start some maintenence. Where is the drain plug for the oil? Any oil or filter better than another? When you shift it iinto gear it grinds the gears. Is that normal?

There are two oil plugs you need to remove to drain it. One is at the bottom of the oil tank and the other is at the bottom right hand side of the motor. Both need a 14mm wrench to remove them. Grinding while going into gear is not a good thing. It could be trans issues, too high an idle, broken motor mount, etc. I would get that taken care of so you don't do damage to it.

Go to the "crankcase" page on that site and number 19 needs removed to drain the oil out of the motor as well.
