Picking up my first ATV tonight, 04 700 EFI Sportsman. But I Need Help!!
#1
FIRST
It has a dead battery so tonight before i pick it up i am going to jump it and ride it a bit to be sure its working properly before i pay. What should i look for as potential problems?
As stated I never owned one before and wasnt even looking in this range, but this one fell in my price range that i was looking at used 400's for.
its an 04, almost never used (24 hours on it) I want to do the right things before using it.
I presume oil change (is it hard on these?)
New Air Filter
check and or replace belt.
anything else?

sounds good, i asked him to put the charger on it tonight to see if we can get it going under its own power rather than from a jumper box. Lights were dim, so the battery does have something in it.

id havm buy a new battery if u were really concerned. or id buy 1 and take it off the cost.</end quote></div>
i factored that into the offered/accepted price. but no money until i see it running and i drive it.

arista, only 24 hrs, hardly broken in, how many miles, < 100?, should shift through HLNRP really solid, minimal delay engaging clutch at correct rpm's, tires show little wear..., in general should be very clean with that little use, I would consider changing the fluids as soon as I got it, engine oil, tranny, frnt+rear gear boxs, that year i believe requires some frnt hub upkeep as well.

its right around 100 miles (according to the owner) i didnt know the yellow button scrolled through the gauges or i would have done that last night.
the bike is clean, but it was sitting outside under a cover so it isnt exactly showroom. its a nice bike and good shape but not perfect.

I bought a 03 SP 700 with 136 miles on it. Same situation you are in. He never used it so the battery was dead. I bought a brand new battery with a full charge (Walmart & Batteries Plus carried them for under $70). I switched them out & tried it with the new battery. If there was a problem or I didn't want it, I just saved the receipt & could take the battery back.
This way you will know for sure if it just the battery.
Change the oil before doing any riding. If you don't want to pay Polaris prices, use Mobil 1 0-40 and Napa Gold 1357 filters. I also drained the tranny fluid & replaced that. Otherwise take it for a "tough" day of riding & brake it in right!
