Default Air Box Lid

Hey everyone, new to this site, but a long time polaris rider.I have a 2001 sportsman 500 H.O and whenever I give it more then half throttle it boggs out.I was playing around with it a bit and when I left the cover off the air box It worked fine.Put it back on and it dies. The neck comming off the top of the air box lid is the problem. With it on it boggs, when i remove the screws and take the neck off the bike workes fine. The breather isn't clogged and it is getting air fine through the breather. So I just left it off for now, just a square hole there now above the filter.I don't get it.
Any Suggestions.Thanks

What does "I was playing around with it a bit mean"?

Did you have the carb off or apart?

Generally speaking, by leaving the top off and it running ok, gives me the impression that something you have done has caused the carb to give to much fuel and the reason I say that is by leaving the top off, you have increased the available air. If the extra air made it run better, it is probably running way rich.

My approach would be to take the carb apart and set everything at stock settings and put the top back on the airbox before you look in another area for the problem.
