Default 2002 Sportsman 500

I have a 2002 Sportsman 500 with a Moose plow and a MileMarker winch. I have been plowing snow of late with it and after about 45 minutes it runs a bit rough and shuts off. If I try to start it up nothing happens, it just turns over. If I wait about 20 minutes it will start right up and run fine. I have tried dry gas already thinking I had some water in the gas. Does anyone have an idea what might be causing this?

Thanks

Mike

Hey Mike,

I have the same problem with my '98 500 sportsman. I found that I have no spark to the plug and I put in a request for help myself. Sorry I can't be of more help.
Good luck, Don

have you changed the fuel filter lately, and or could the carb. be freezing up, it does sound like fuel problem.

almost sounds like your fuel vent is clogged, and not letting the carb get any fuel. Like pouring gas out of a can with no vent it will only let so much out with no vent. Check your lines from the tank, and good luck

Trail hog. Did you check you kill switch to see if it was on. How about the battery terminals, are they clean and tight. Will the quad start with the pull start?

check to see if its spark when you try to start it right back up. if so then it might be a blocked vent line. take the gas cap off to see if theres any pressure release. if so thats the problem.

The kill switch is in the on position. I have a brand new battey and everything is clean and tight. The motor turns over with no problem, just have no spark to the plug.

it's probably vapor locking, the gas is getting burned before it gets to the motor, try taking that heat tape around all the gas lines, did it to both my machines, and they no longer do that

This is a log shot but there were some 500's around that year that had a piched spark plug wire and it would do very strange things to the motor. They would run, they wouldn't run, miss, etc. From the factory they were pinched between the fuel tank and the frame. It would still test good usually with an ohmmeter but wouldn't work. Check it and if it's pinched, get some new plug wire(bulk) from the parts store(napa, etc.) and replace it.
