Default 400 Scrambler

I am working on this scrambler for a guy. The thing set outside for 2 years. I drain all the fluids and cleaned the carb. After all the normal stuff i filled all fluids and the battery was shot, so i had to use the good ole pull rope. It started on the first pull After doing a little fine tuning on the carb, i decided i would take it down the street for a little test ride.
I tried to put it in gear and just grinded, so i tried reverse just grinded.I thought being it was a automatic, and it was at idle you could just put it in gear. My question is do you have to do something to be able to put it in gear?

Nope, some is wrong in the tranny if it won't go in gear while idling.

Try lowering your idle (if possible) and see if it goes into gear. As low as you can.

I lowered the idle really low. But something in the tranny is engaged. Cause it just grinds and the idle is so low it will hardly run. And if you jam it in gear it will lunge forward and die.

Did tou look at your linkage. There is only a very small window for low and reverse to work. They all ride on the same arm. Mine ended up having bad shift forks in the tranny. But I thought I had it down when I adjusted the linkage and gained some more time before the inevidable

Ill check it out...Im just having this feeling that something in the clutch is seized up from setting outside in the weather for 2 years.

Polaris has been known for having one of the most simple clutch designs. I would have to say it is in the tranny.

If the clutch weights/springs were frozen somehow, it would still go in gear and rev, but the belt wouldn't ride up the sheeves.
