I have a 2005 Sportsman 800 EFI that will not ilde. I took it to a dealer and they told me that I needed the engine rebuilt. So I let them. It idle OK for one trip out but the idle problem retuned. The dealer has not been any help. Has anyone had an idle problem with a Polaris 800 EFI and was able to find the problem?

explain more about why the delaer rebuilt the engine because of an idle issue. there is no idle adjustment beside the dealer doing it w/ the computer. you have the etc adjustment in the cable and thats it. what does it do or not do? how much did they rebuild?

Just to add one thing to Sten's, If your running a K&N air filter and have been riding in dusty conditions, grime will buildup in the throttle body and will wreak havoc with your idle as it did mine.....If you're running a K&N post back and I'll walk ya thru what I did to fix the problem...

That's where you are wrong. Idle can be adjusted from a D-shaped screw in throttlebody with suitable pliers or a home made tool. There is no need for computers. If you want to intialize or check the base setting of the tps, all you need is 2 pieces of wire, accurate volt-meter and that tool with what you adjust the throttle plate.

Yes I am running a K&N air filter. In fact the dealer told me I needed to spray more oil on the filter than I was doing because he saw dust in the throttle body.
This is why the dealer believe I sucked dirt into the engine causing a compression leak and a rebuild. I beleived I got screwed. So yes, please tell me what you did to fix the problem.

Ok this is pretty simple.......Just remove the rubber boot which goes to the throttle body.....You're gonna get some throttle body intake cleaner, I used 3M, open the butterfly in the TB, you'll probably see some grime in there, spray some cleaner in there but not too much.....Then take a Q tip and clean the walls of the TB and the butterfly itself......Take your time and do a thorough job..Then put everything back together.....Well that's all I did and my idle returned to right around 1150rpms...Good luck and let me know if it works for you...BTW were you driving in any dusty conditions cause thats what did mine in.......

I was told by the dealer that the idle problem was caused by sucking dirt into the engine causing ring and valve problems. All because he believes I did not use enough oil on my K&N filter. They replaced both pistons, rings and valves. The fix was short lived.
