Default 800 Shifter Issue

<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>Originally posted by: WAYNEA4

I have a 07 800 Stealth Edition Sportsman with about 100 miles on the clock, I have noticed that ever since it was new that when idiling it did not shift well. The gear shifter acts like it is sticking on something, I figured that the idle was too high. When you cut it off it shifts in and out of the gears just fine. I called the dealer where I bought it and they told me to bring it over and they would hook it up to the computer and adjust the idle. I finaly took the rig to the dealer and was advised that the plastic bushing on the shifter was worn out and needed to be replaced, my idle was also too high. Just curious if anybody eles has had this problem with their rig, thanks in advance.</end quote></div>

mine is the same way,i had a post on here awhile back with very little response, aas all ways, seems everybody talking about something else, anyway, the problem is the same with all our atvs, turn it off it shifts fine, start it up and it's a differnt story, mine is real bad if i shift to low and then i try to get it into high again,i have to turn it off and restart the motor,i'm afraid i going to break something,i'm going to take it to the shop soon; anybody having this problem, get on level ground put it low gear..mine just takes off by its self, not real fast but it does move about 2 or 3 mph,i've had 4 polaris's and none of them done this,i'm wondering if you all's does the same thing,if so please let me know,it might be the problem we're all having, something is engaging when you start the motor when it's not suppose to............

Yeah mine sounds like it is the same as yours, when you shift it into low forget about anything else unless you turn it off. The dealer did adjust my idle and it is around 900 rpm, I have noticed that when I go to reverse it will start to move on its on. Guess it is a bug in that model.

Mine doesn't creep at all like you're describing.

WayneA4, I have the exact same model you have down to the color and it should not creep that much.

i wish there was a mechanic on this forum to answer some of these questions we all have,i know one thing our machines are not suppose to creep when put into gear, shift fine when not running but shift hard when it is running; i bet their is a lot more out there that nobody is aware of,or just don't want to admit that something is not just right,i think there is something wrong in the clutches;; i've had other polaris atvs and they didn't do this, another thing i've noticed this 2008 500 efi i just bought is geared alot lower than the ones i've had in the past, the other ones kind of felt like it was slipping it you got on a little bit of a grade,i had to put a healclicker clutch kit in these other machines to cure this problem;anyway i'm going to try to get to the bottom of this,it ain't right, and we shouldn't have to pay 7,500 for something thats not right...

The "creep" may be misaligned cluthes/belt. Mine started creeping, and found I had a bad front lower motor mount. This allowed motor to move, causing misalignment with trans. I believe. You can't always tell by just looking at mount if they have seperated. You need to pry on them with crow bar or similar. This has been an issue with some models/years, and there is a newer mount.

Sheepdog-they must have changed that linkage, and doesn't sound much (any) better. The rod on mine has one bend with through bolts at each end, no clips. Looks like you could flip it, and put on either in or out at both ends.

Anyone else have better luck?

I had to bend the linkage rod a little bit to clear the exhaust pipe. I think it was rubbing right where it bends.

the wheelers are not suppose to move when you put them gear until the throttle is pushed engaging the clutch. either the one way bushing is bad, or the belt has shrunk(yes it happened to mine),or the clutches are misaligned. then of course there is it idling too high. most of htese wheelers shouldnt be above 1,200 rpms. on both of my 800's the shfting linkage has been rubbing on the plastic but didnt interfear much w/ the shifting between gears and didnt make it harder to shift for me.
