Without 4x4 the snow will win. My '96 xplorer lost the 4x4. I have read a lot of posts and have some questions. I repaired a wire on the left side but wonder if both the brown and the grey wire should have power with the key on. The AWD light comes on but will not engage on either side. Does oil level in the hubs have a say weather or not they will engage?

in them early years the speedo didint have the same effect as the new ones. yes the correct type and amount of hub fluid is important. do you have power going down to each hub?

Thats correct our 97 Sp500 had 4wd even when the speedo was smashed off in a roll over, also our 97 and 2001 has 4wd even if the battery is dead. Change the hub fliud is a easy place to start.

Thanks for the input. The rev limiter does work and I tried on a jack and neither wheel spins. At the hubs there is a light brown and a grey wire. I have power at the grey wires but not the brown ones at the panel with the key on. Should the brown wires also be powered with the AWD light on but not engaged? I will also mention when the trani is put in a forward gear the lever feels like it could go alittle further, but the AWD light will come on if the button is depressed. Is it possible the light could be on but not engage because of an adjustment?

Pull the front hubs apart and look. Getting power there, is good.

Tried turning the front axle shaft to see if things were free and heard the small sprocket from the drive chain fall to the floor!! The bolt holding the sprocket has broken. I removed the broken piece, is this a common problem? Everything seems to move freely with the chain off. Hopefully I'll get the chain on tomorrow it is super tight. I haven't run it yet but should be fixed.
