ok so the problem has escalated.... my brother rode the quad today and called me telling me that it never quit getting groggy and that it cut out on him a few times until he finally got it crunk and had to gun it all the way back to the house so it wouldn't cut out again. he said it really smelled like oil and smoke was seaping out around the pipes when he got back to the house. what now? :/

 

I would stop running it until you do some diagnosis. If the piston skirt broke, you can do some serious damage.
