Scrambler 500 tires
#1
My wife has a 98 Scrambler 500. When we bought it, it came with gator tires. To me it seems like they are a lil heavy, they go like hell in the mud but I think a lighter tire would be better. It also seems like it doesnt brake very well and I checked the brakes they are good it locks the wheels up but it requires a bit of squeeze I'm wondering it the lighter tires would solve that prob, too. And also the ride seems rough a bit rough I know it wont be anything like my sportsman but I would think it be better than it is. Any suggestions on tire brand, model, size? It is mainly used on the trails but they are rocky and she likes to hit the mud holes all day long. Thanks for the input! Another quick question do the front tires have to be a different size than the back heigth wise? I dont know a whole lot about tire size and the way they work w/ the 4x4

I personally think the st 489s in the stock sizes give you the best all around performance. And you do need the size ratio stock to have the 4x4 work right

I have an '03 Scrammy 500ho 4x4 that I run Mudlites on, and I couldn't be happier. The Scrammy 4x4 is heavy enough without adding heavier tires!! I ride the trails, play in the mud, and an occasional hill climb... I have never been stuck unless I high centered!! Great in the snow, trail, mud, not so great on glare ice... long story

The only draw back to Mudlites is they have weak side walls. That is where they save the weight on them.I have plugged a bunch of those on trails

About the weak walls on the MudLites does it matter on what "kind" you have
XL Vs XTR etc? I know they are supposed to be a 6-ply tire. I have stockers
on my 800 and hope to upgrade this year to the Mudlites, still debating on
the size 27" or 28" or even if another tire Surges as a tough competitor that
many run and can attest to. I am not hearing anything on those new Carlsie
Mud Wolf tires. It seems from the magazine write-ups/ADS they are Carlsie's
competition to ITP mud lites. What do ya think?

I dont know much about the other tires but all the Mudlites have softer sidewalls. That is where they save weight. With the power you have weight wouldnt matter so much.Depending on where you ride I liked GBC Gators on my 400L Sportsman never had to plug one in the 3 yrs I had it.

Yeah I have the gators on now and they are tough as nails. I wouldnt mind having them on my Sportsman just dont want them on her Scrambler. The gators are holding up great!!

I had just plain ol' Mudlites on my Scrambler and I was pretty happy with them. They were a little soft for my liking, they seemed to wear pretty quick on the roads. I rode with a guy that has a 400 EX with bearclaw tires and they seemed to work really well. Almost went as many places as me with 4wd
