Considering a pipe for your SP500... Read this

Greg is ABSOLUTELY right!
The HO is just as bad/worse than the std. With the box cover removed and stock filter I can not run wide open, it spits and sputters.
I am looking at ways to enlarge the OEM snorkle and still keep things hidden.
I think that ceramic coating the OEM pipe would be nearly as beneficial as aftermarket exhaust. This is AFTER the intake is freed up of course!

I can't get my SP500HO to pull a wheelie in low or high. If I punch it and throw myself backward I still can't get it to lift the front end off the ground. What's up with that? How are you guys able to pull a wheelie and hold it.

I did put on a snorkel and it wouldn't run at full throttle. I drilled a hole same size as the o.d. of the pipe( 2 3/8 ) thinking it would give it a snug fit but, had about 1/16-1/8 slack around the pipe, nothing the old ABS glue and silicone couldn't handle though. I used a shut off valve on my snorkel so all I had to do is cut the air flow off to make it run right on top end and then lean out idle-mid throttle by turning the air/fuel mixture in. it was easier for me to do this cause I didnt want to re-jet and on top of that I am not very good with carbs YET! I would have used Gregs idea on entering the air box but didnt have enough room too. Listen to this man, he has good advice, idea's, and knows what he is talking about. Just want to commend you for all your help Greg.
Thanks,
Ryan

Has anyone tried the Mag. 500 air box lid? The intake on it is quite a bit bigger. I should have tried my wifes before we got new HO's. I also expearimented with air intakes on my "97" 500 Xplorer and found the same thing it wouldnt run with the cover off. Was never able to gain any improvements by putting on the later syle Sportsman air box.

I will have to try your idea`s but what is your opinion on potential gains from a Scrambler? Could there be be the same problems with airbox restriction?
Thanks for your reply and opinion.

I am not sure, but I want to remind any of you that choose to alter the airbox that if you are not careful, you may lean the bike out too much which can and will damage your motor. If you do not know what you are doing, leave it alone. (Just a disclaimer so I do not feel responsible when one of you guys damage your motor)

hey Gregsims,
Great tip. I have been looking to upgrade my cat. I didnt want to put a pipe on it. Since I do, do some hunting with my machine. And it seems to me that the stock cat system is pretty free flowing. So I took off my air box cover, and it barely ran. So, I see what my new project will be this next week. I hope I can get some results as you did on your SP. Thanks again

So Greg, would you suggest I use 1 1/2 instead of 2 inch from the start? I already have the K&N on it. Who makes a jet kit? I leaned my bike out 2 weeks after I got it, and got the jet from the dealer, but boy, what a hassle that was. Im sure Id be too lean with a snorkle.
Thanks for all your help.
Dave
PS, Go ahead with the white spring, its still plenty smooth.
