2006 SP500: Rear brake pedal bottoms out
#1
I just discovered that the rear brake pedal on my wife's 2006 SP500 EFI bottoms out and doesn't stop the rear axle. Tracing the hydraulic line back, it goes straight to the rear brake - and I can't find a resevoir (sp?) anywhere in the circuit! It has its own bleed fitting back on the rear brake, but I can't find anyplace to add or check the fluid level.
The front hand control works great, and its resevoir (sp?) has plenty of fluid.
How do I check/add fluid to the rear brake circuit?!?
Thanks!

checked the 2005 service manual and my Hawkeye manual and if it stayed consistent, it should be right behind the plastic next to the pedal...pop the side access panel off and it should be right in that area...

you just need to bleed the footbrake. this is a common thing with polaris.
you need a 1\4 inch wrench, some brake fluid.
look behind the right rear wheel at the brake caliper , you will see 2 rubber caps, under the rubber caps are the bleeders. remove the cap facing to the rear of the machine, its the easy one to get at. open bleeder, push and hold foot pedal, close bleeder, chech fluid in resevoir.
repeat, after about 4 times you will here air spit out of the bleeder, continue until the air is gone. KEEP THE RESEVOIR FULL reinstall cap, wipe off brake fluid, it eats paint.

those rear master cylinders are notoriously bad! I am on my third one. They are easy to swap out and you can get one cheap from http://www.precision-aircraft.net/parts.htm He makes buggies out of Sportsmans and has lots of good take-off parts that he doesn't use. I got one from him for $25 I think.

I'll look behind the plastic again, but I swear there's no resevoir behind it. The pedal pushes a small cylinder, which is connected to a hydraulic line that runs back to the brake. I didn't see a resevoir but I'll look again.

i know on my 08' the res. is up high under the seat connected w/ a black rubber hose. if you find brake fluid into it try setting a heavy weight on the brake pedal over night to see if that brings back any pressure. i had to do that on my 06' 450 a couple of times and worked good.

We've seen quite a few lately that the "rod" on the rear master cylinder is not completely returning to the full extended position, causing it to not "pump". If the rod is not touching the brake pedal at all times, pull the rod to full extended position (may need pliers to grip), spray some Kroil (WD-40) on the rod and work until it starts returning on its own. Make sure your resevior is full of fluid........

I find the rear break comes in handy for me when I am on a hill and have to back up and out of something. I can use my foot break and that leaves my left hand free to push in the yellow button.
