Carburetor HELP!
#1
I just bought a pair of non running Polaris ATV's. One of them is a 1993 Trail Boss 250 2 stroke.
The tank was empty and clean so I added some gas, I could smell the fuel but did not see any leaks, at first. I was able to get it started, but before I rode it I lubed and adjusted chain, bearings etc. When I pulled the trans dipstick, it was full to the top of the "tube" and smelled like gas! As it turns out it is gas, over the past 24 hous it has spilled al of the gear lube onto the garage floor, and I assume the gas has evaporated off the floor! There was no trans leak before this happened.
I attached a photo, gas drips from one spot, another was hooked to a hose that went to the trans and the third was open with no hose.
Does anyone know what is going on and where these "ports" should attach to?

The other non running Polaris is a 95 300 4X4 2 stroke, it has a different (larger) carb, but it has a hose from the carb to a "Vent" nipple on the trans as well. It is the same owner, maybe he did this himself? I thought maybe it was a vacume for some reason?
A is the overflow, which means my float valve is not closing, I will check that out for sure.....And add a hose to keep it from dripping on the starter!
Thanks guys!

There should be a vent line with a check on both C andA.Nothing should go to the tranny.</end quote></div>
I agree with ftwflh, Nothing on the carb should go to the tranny - B & C are vents for the carb, A is the bowl overflow. If any or all of these get closed off from atmosphere, there is potential for the float to "stick" as air may not move to replace fluid volume.
Like stendori said, since you have the carb off, now is the time to clean the carb and check your float level. Take your float needle out and use a golf tee to clean the needle seat well.

I just went thru cleaning and servicing mine. My cuz friend came over and
we took it apart. We cleaned the jets with his set of Orfice needles (special grade
thickness in the set) and used alot of carb spray to wipe out the inner cover, float
and bowl, thru the jets etc. It will look like a turned green color if that crappy GAS
left deposits and junk in there. Some black dirt clumps were in the corners too.
My PoPo SP450 rides really nice now, it was no big deal to take apart.

B & C should go to a one-way check valve & vent towards the ground between the tranny & engine. A is the bowl overflow & should vent to the same area.
and your tranny should also have a vent line going to the same general area.
....A & the tranny vent don't need a check valve
You might want to pick up a rebuild kit for the carb...I had the same issues... float needle wouldn't seal well & if you left the gas on it would overflow the bowl & run out on the ground. Kit was $13 on Ebay
