No Oil in Rear Diff on Sportsman 08 800 from Factory
#2
Do you have the dealer checkoff sheet? Polaris requires the dealer to check all fluids, sign off on the checkoff sheet, and have you sign that they did it. I would have it checked out now, and have it recorded that there was no fluid in event of later problems.

Don't panic. Looking into the fill hole of the rear differential you will not see any fluid. Check the manual and you will find that there is a special procedure to use for checking this level. Basically what you need to do is fabricate a short length of small material and insert it two inches into the fill hole at a downward angle to the left. You're basically making a dipstick.........whatever you do, don't drop it in there. There should be some fluid on the tip of it.
Strange procedure I agree, but check it like that and I'm sure you'll find fluid in there.
Good luck.

Called the dealer and explained as noted above. He said to take out the drain plug and see if anything comes out. This is tonights task.
I will check tonight and see if there is a check off sheet.
All the other fluids were up to the fill hole.

Funny you should start a thread about this. I just bought a brand new 08 as well and when I checked mine, I did not see any fluid. According to my manual, the fluid should be up to the bottom of the threads on that inspection hole. I was just planning on buying some next time I'm there, I know there is some in there though as when I stuck my pinky way in there I could feel it.

The transmission will be up to the fill hole and you can get oil on your pinky by sticking it in there. But the rear differential is different. Don't drain the fluid before you check it, because you'll need the little tool/dipstick to refill it anyway.
I'm sure their is some in there, or like TLC said, you'd have some serious problems way before now.

Well I took it back to the dealer and they flushed out the diff and gave me an extra 12 months warranty. I am still wondering on the long term effects.
The 1.6 oz of oil that was in it was gray metallic, it should have min. of 5 oz's.
