Default 02 400 sportsman top spped?

New to ATV's, Bought a 02 400 sportsman from sea level. ran ok at 3740 ft but took her into the black hills @ 5-6000 ft. Couldn't even run her in high, had a 167.5 main, Put a 160 in, moved needle up one notch & installed a K&N filter. She runs good 42 mph up hill (high on the 2 track road), 28mph (low) 55-60mph down hill (high).
Is this all I can expect out of it?

I also intend to intall some lighter clutch wieghts
Any input is greatly apprieciated.

Thank You in advance

We have 2 - 2005, 400s. They do 52-53 according to the speedo. Never used a GPS on them for speed.

Really??? I never heard of that one, and I thought I knew every kind of Sportsman there was since 96. If you get it on a hard level surface you'll get a better idea what it will really do. An old worn belt won't get you all the way up to top speed because the gear ratio changes when the belt gets skinnier. I would expect it to go a little over 50.

The 425 motor is a 4 stroke and was used in the 400 Sportsman and 425 Expedition. The 2 stroke 400 was used in the 400 Scambler and 400 Explorer was a 378cc.

I rode with a person who had a full sizes Sportsman 335. A 335 on a 700lb frame! but it performed rather well.

That's the ones I know. 425 4-stroke, and "400" 2-stroke that's not a 400. One of my friends has a dark green Expedition 400 that almost looks like a Sportsman. It takes off quick and it's fast but I don't know how fast.

One of my friends bought that one from my other friend's dad last year and rolled it over the first time I rode with him. He can't handle a 335 or his beer. I don't think I could ever be happy with that quad but almost bought a 425.
