Your Opinion On Air Filters.....

so everyone says i should get a K&N Air Filter or whatever. does it really make that much of a difference for that cheap of price? im really looking to upgrade my spped on my crappy 01' Trailboss for under $100 because its only doing about 35mph right now and i know its capable of going faster. any suggestions would help.
Thanks,
Dave

It sounds to me like you have either an air problem or belt problem. A few years back a buddy had an 400 explorer and it would not run for crap and was slow. We looked into the carb and everything but it turned out to be an extreamily dirty filter. Your belt may be worn so bad that its not hooking up anymore.

I myself think of more air flow with less restriction(ex K&N) =less protection........
Think about it for a second.........If your letting in more air flow with < protection that on a Quad is not what I need .........I want to have the dust and fine Particle stopped and to me paper is the best out there (if you keep it dry) And I am sure the foam and other are good as well ,But I don't want to keep oiling them after a few rides either........
That's just my view on the topic...........Caper..........

I think the K&N is a little over rated. I can't say a real spike in my speed
but it seems to throttle easier and lets from a stop point to get up and go
but its like in the low percentages. i think when you make the gains is when
you have the K&N added with pipe added with a clutch or spring etc. I only
have bought the K&N for now.

My buddy has K&N filters on the whole families quads and I always end up waiting for them to clean and dry and oil their filters before we go for a ride. I swear it must take them two hours to get ready, and this is while we are already set up at camp. And it happens a lot. I just hop on and ride. After our two-three week summer vacation I look at mine again and rinse off the pre-filter, while they have to keep cleaning theirs. When mine is dirty I throw it away. I don't want to spend several hours out of each season screwing around with air filters all year. They use gasoline to clean the filters instead of detergent. It gets the oil out but not all the dirt, so they have to clean the filters again after a few dusty rides.

My rule of thumb on air filters is K&N on things that wnt be getting wet but if water will be in its life run a UNI or Twin Air foam filter. No big gain but you never have to buy another filter.

If you use a K&N you must also use a prefilter. This way you clean the prefilter very quickly and don't have to clean and oil the K&N all the time. I only clean and oil my K&N twice a year. Same with the stock filter, you clean the prefilter a lot, the actual air filter stays clean.
If you need to lean out your mixture a little, the K&N will do it. I have the K&N on my carbed 500 and haven't had any problems. I run paper on the 800 because I don't want to take the chance of oil getting on the throttle body plate and screwing with it that way.
