Default New guy has questions

I am thinking of buying my first Quad and it will be a Polaris. I am considering the Sportsmam 500 EFI Touring. While the back rider will be primarily my grandson, I am concerned if the 500 will have enough power should my wife decide to ride with me sometimes. I weigh about 270 lbs. and my wife, (well I am not that stupid to post it). Let's say she is average. It will mostly be used for trail riding and hunting trips. I am not looking to set speed records but don't want to be under powered. I should add that if my wife likes riding we will be buying her one next. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks

a 500 would be plenty of power for you to haul 2 people. just low range in real bad trails(you should anyways no matter what size) and crawl right thru.

Howdy highdesertrat......I have a 2007 500X2 camo and I feel that the 500 will have enough power for you and your wife plus your gear. I'm 6'6', 235 lb. and I have rode with a 220 lb passenger plus gear with no difficulty. After you get your "ATV legs", if you feel you need more power.....give the 500 to your wife and get the bigger one for you. I'm glad I got the 500... but I'm ready for the 700 X2 or the 800 Touring. I would have gone nuts on something bigger in the beginning. ADC is a big thing for me after I rode a Sportsman that had ADC....mine doesn't have ADC.... and now I'm in the market for a new Polaris. The extra 6.5 inches of wheelbase on the Touring and the X2 is a plus in my book too.

Hey Highdesertrat, I go the wife a 2007 500X2 deluxe, it has the little box on the back. I am a big guy, 6'3 about 280 and I find the 500 has plenty of power for us to ride 2 up. She loves it, feels comfortable on it and it came with ADC/EBS and turf mode in the rear Diff.
I also have 07 800 deluxe and that is awesome more "My Size"

I don't know maybe it is me, but when I sit on her 500 right after I have been on my 800, I know hers is longer and feels more stable going up hills but all in all it just feels like a smaller quad.

That said, My son is also around 6 foot and about 200lbs and he and I on that 500 it handles just fine.

Trust me, I've been on high cc atvs and the power they put out is fanominal. The 500cc engines don't sound like they have a lot in them compared to the 700 and 800 engines but you'd be surprised! 500cc is plenty power for the trails and most of whatever else you would be doing.

Welcome to the world of ATVing! Be safe, have fun, and good luck!

I only know of one guy on the forum that outweighs me. When I ride by myself it's like riding double and my 500 hauls butt. Lots of butt. Welcome to the forum, and the Polaris family too, I hope.

highdesertrat - welcome to the forum. There are a lot of great people on this forum with a wealth of good info.

I agree with the others, the 500 will have plenty of power. I just bought the 500X2. For $200 more I could have had the 700X2, but after researching the consensus was the I would just be burning more gas unnesessarily. I didn't want to be the first guy out of gas each time we ride so I went with the 500. All the others I ride with have 500's (Polaris and Arctic Cats), except for one guy who has a 700 - and yip - he is the first guy to need more fuel everytime.

How old is your grandson? I was trying to choose between the touring and the X2. I chose the X2 as my son is only 5 and I thought the X2 offered him a little more side to side protection from slding off. The touring does however offer a much nmore plush seat for the passenger.

Here are a couple of pics of my X2 and you can see more pics at MyPage

Hey Rat, I have an 06 X2 500efi. It hauls my 350 lbs. fine. I've had riders up to 200 lbs. with me and it handles it fine. The rear is set up nice and stiff for the extra load and the engine handles it fine. I've been up some 45 degree slopes, over step-ups almost 3 feet high, over rock infested hills, and through water/mud holes. The 500 has plenty of power. Going slow use low, fast use high. Works fine. The only thing I did was to get heavy duty springs for the front. I've only been out once in the winter and they felt much better. A lot less squatting.

Wow! Thanks for all the information. I guess the 500 will be the one to get for my purpose. I really appreciate all the responses.

I guess I will take a look at the X2 for the reason you mention. My grandson is six. I am looking for something were can go out and do together. He likes the outdoors and riding in the 4Runner so I thought I would give this a try.

Yes you are right. There are a lot of great people on this forum with a wealth of good info.

Thanks again to all

Brian
