What changed in 2004.5???
#1
I was hoping someone could help me figure this out. I own a 2004.5 Polaris Sportsman 400. I noticed that when purchasing parts, most parts are for 2004 and prior or 2005 and up. My bike is a 2004.5, so should I be ordering parts for a 2004, or a 2005? What changes were made on the 04 1/2 models that was different from the standard 04'? Thanks for any help guys.

I am not sure about 400's, but I have an 04.5 sportsman 500 and this is what I have been able to find out.
04.5;
digital fuel guage and diferent instrumentation
shifter pattern is all straight up and down, no more h pattern
radial tires
different ecm
and the main one;
4x4 is actuated in the center diff. housing not in the hubs.
The front end is pretty much an 05 front. Check your front hubs, if they are metal and have a filler, then they are the old style. If it is just a rubber cap coming through the rim it is the new style. My production date was in 8 4 03 and it is considered a late 04 or an 04.5. Keep your V.I.N. handy when ordering parts. It will save you alot of headaches.

So, should I consider it an 04 or an 05?</end quote></div>
Send me your vin and I will give you the exact model and year that you have(the way it needs to be entered in the Polaris parts program) Keep in mind there is some personal info revealed when running a vin(phone number, name, address, etc) so it's up to you. You should be able to call your dealer and have them run it to if you would feel safer.
At work I try to get the vin from people evrytime if I can to make sure the wrong parts don't get orderd. I have seen over the years where polaris will change something from year to year but won't update the books or parts program to reflect the new part. Having the actual year/model really helps save a lot of headaches.
If you want to send it do it in a PM, don't post it online.

I though there just was no ECM period, prior to 04.5? I do not have this ECM thing I hope.
