Need some help - Water logged
#1
Hello All, I am new to this sport and forum group. I have a Polaris 2002 Scrambler 500CC. I got it stuck yesteday in the water and I was not able to get it out for 5 - 10 minutes. Anyway the water only came up to roughly the bottum of the fuel tank. But now I can not even get it to turn over. I hit the starter and all you hear is a big clunk and that is it. Does anybody have any ideas on what it is? and what I need to do to fix it? Any help will be greatly appericated.
Thank you,
Bryan

sounds like the engine is hydrolocked, take out the spark plug and see if it turns over, if it is locked water will come out cylinder, stand the bike on the rear bumper to fully drain the exaust, check oil for traces of water

Good thread. We went riding today and we have three of the twelve that
think they may have water in the Oil/engine (NOT me thank GOD!). I know there
has been similar threads in the past that address this but what are also all the
things to look for and the methods (steps) for removal/drain for to help Bkumler, me and ET AL, ?
I remember if it is bad enough we need to have several cycles of oil changes and clycle through KEROSINE? Right? Where are all those places?

I've work on a 500 sportsman and i pulled off the right side cover to get at the plug, as for the oil try some diesel fuel in the engine to get rid of the water, pull the engine over with your cord a few times drain out the diesel change oil filter.

just dont start it if you have water in the oil as it may hurt the engine in the long run. i have heard where you can use diesle or kerosene to help flush out the water but dont run these long time w/ just that as the lube in the crank case. change the oil until its no longer has water in it. you can use just cheap oil until you get all the water out before you put the expensive synthetic back in. imo.

Okay great info. Bro! Is there any other places
I need to drain fluids, diff/gear/tran fluids?
So when talking about the Oil, just the plastic resvoir
and the right side crankcase right? And just keep pouring
the oil through?
AND don't start it back up till when?
(Also, I remember some debate about the 5-10sec start
w/no OIL filled while pouring oil through or stand still.
Seems a little risky, I'd be leary about doing it, any truth
to this?)

Guide for getting your water logged quad going again.
Once the bike shuts off in the water do NOT try to start it again. If it is hydrolocked the pressure from trying to start it will push the water past the rings into the crankcase. This will damage the rings sometimes. Most of the water enters the crankcase through the crankcase vent that goes into the airbox.
First get the quad on dry ground and draing the airbox. Then, if you have a carborated bike, turn the gas off and turn the screw on the bottom of the carb counter clockwise and let it drain until gas/water stops coming out of the drain tube that comes off the bottom of the carb. Tighten the screw back up and turn the gas back on afterward. Then remove the spark plug and spin the engine over until the water stops shooting out of the plug hole. Use a ciggarette lighter to dry the moisture off the end of the spark plug. Then put the plug back in and check your oil. If it has water in it change it but if it don't choke the bike and start it. Good luck.
