Machine is a 99 500 Magnum 4x4 it came stock with Front 25x8x12 and Rear 25x11x10 tires and I want to buy new tires and was thinking of jumping up a size and whats got me stumped is being a 4x4 I thought ALL the tires needed to be the same size so the transfer case don't get pooched, how do they run a 10" & 12" rim and have it NOT blow? How do I pick out the next size up without doing damage to the ATV/ what sizes can I run for 25's & 26's. Thanks

 

the height of you tire is 25" that is right, you 8 and 11 are the width of you tire, and 12 and 10 are rim sizes, i am suprised that the rim sizes would be different, but that is what the numbers stand for

 

You can put 26" tires on that ATV without trouble. The odd 10" rim on the back may make shopping a little more difficult. You can get 12" rims for the back off Ebay rather cheap though.

99 Magnum specs Polaris used those odd 10 " rear rims on the Magums up to 2001,and up to 2002 on the Sportsmans.

Nice thing for the dealer to do, when I change my tires I will replace the 10" rear rims to 12s also.

 

Polaris used 10" rear wheels for several years. They were also (if I recall correctly) 2.5" wider and made a nice round profile on the tires just like the fronts. 12" wheels give you a different profile something like switching tires from 70**s to 40**s on a car. They were round, now they're ovals.

** = ratio of height to width, i.e., a "50" is only 50% as tall (ground to wheel) as it is tall. Look at some "wide oval" muscle car tires compared to standard, then look at the quad to see what I mean.

When my friend got his Blackwaters, the front and rear wheels were both 7" wide. The front tires stuck out 1/2" on each side, and the rear tires stuck out 4 times as far. It looked really weird to have a wide oval rear and round profile front, but the manufacturers only want to make one size wheel, and it cuts down on inventory for the dealers too.

 

I understand how to read the tires & rim sizes and they are the correct rim sizes from factory OEM thats why I don't understand the 10-12 combo. Yep the rear has a nice profile like the front tires do but it just seems as though the transfer case would get damaged just like a 4x4 pick-up would. So I'm ok if I run the same size front & rear rims? Its not like the differentials have different gearing to make up for the different size rims from the factory or do they???? Thats my worry if I go to the same size all around.

 

you can run 12" rims on back w/out any problem.
