Aluminum wheel troubles?
#1
Has anyone had problems with keeping the lug nuts tight with your aluminum wheels? I found the lug nuts loose on my wifes left rear wheel after our ride this weekend! The bike came with the steel wheels but our dealer done a swap to aluminum for us. I think they failed to tighten the nuts on that wheel because the other three wheels where plenty tight. I took the wheel off and looked for signs of damage and the lug nut holes look slightly egg shaped from the back but look o.k. from the front. I feel partly responsible for not checking them before the ride but with the other three wheels being o.k I kinda feel like it's the dealers fault. This is only the second time the bike has been out on the trails! What do ya'll think? Also how tight should they be, I don't want to break something? Should I say anything to the dealer in case I find down the road that that wheel keeps giving me trouble?

Talk to the dealer. They probably didn't tighten it enough. My dealer didn't tighten down my steel rims after a brake job, and I almost lost a front wheel. It flopped from side to side on every curve. I had to replace all 4 studs and nuts. it took me awhile to figure out what that noise was. Now I put blue Loc-Tite on all my lug nuts.

there was a lot of issues awhile back with people putting aluminum rims on quads that came with steel if I remember right the studs were longer on the ones that came with aluminum rims and if you put them on quads that came with steel rims they would come loose from not having enough threads ...you may find some old post about it.
here i found one

90 ft.lbs for Polaris mag rims. If they didn't put the Deluxe (longer) wheel studs in, then its just a matter of time before the threads give out and your rims fall off. When I put my 800 Deluxe rims on my wife's 500 HO, I had to replace the HO wheels studs with Deluxe model studs. Make sure you have the longer studs installed.

Wow 90 ft lbs. seems like alot ! I'm sure they put the longer studs in because they had her bike 2 extra days due to having to order "different bolts" for the wheels to fit. What scares me is they didn't even know that they needed longer bolts until they tried to do the swap. I kinda felt like that should be common knowledge for a dealership. Thanks for the help, looks like I'll be bustin' out the torque wrench!

you should have a good 1/4" of threds sticking out w/ the wheel on if not then it doesnt have the longer wheel studs. if you look in your manual it will tell you (i think)what ft. lbs to tighten your wheels. sheepdog is correct on the 90 ft lbs and its 27 ftlbs for the steel rims.
