Where do I begin?!

Two weeks ago I bought this 700 sportsman and a couple of days ago the engine started ratling when hot. It seems to go away with acceleration. I do not know a lot about this particuar machine, but it only has 300 hours and is in pretty good shape overall. Maybe in need of oil change (hopefully)?

Next; this machine backfires regularly when decelerating.

Finally; where do I get sevice manual?

I have an 03 700 manual on my puter but is 260 meg PDF file so kinda hard to send. Could put on a cd & send.

 

Either way that would be great. I would really appreciate this.

Describe the rattling sound you are hearing when the motor is hot. Is the motor sound coming from the right side of the motor? The back firing is probably from a cracked carb boot or a bad exhaust donut gasket.

I agree, that is where I would start.

 

Thanks for the ideas. It sounds to me like lifters/rocker arms.? It comes and goes. I thought that maybe it was not getting the oil it needs. I am going to do an oil/filter change today and see what happens. Thanks much
