I'm not beating a dead horse, but I'd like some ideas on a new, quieter setup.
What I've got is a DG pipe ( the model doesn't jump to mind, but there's not that many). I like the quicker throttle response and the lack of back-firing, but my buddies are complaining about the noise. I've taken all the discs out I can and it's still loud.
I read in someone's post about using a glass-pack adapted to their header pipe. I was in the muffler shop yesterday and looked at the 12" and 18" glass-packs and I can't see them being any quieter(?) than what I have now. Am I gonna have to go to stock to get a decent decibel? I personally don't have a problem with the sound, but I get tired of riding alone! ;D

Todd: Went threw the same thing with a DG on my old 500 Xplorer. Liked the performance but like you did't like to ride a lone. I'm going to guess high performance pipes and noise go hand in hand. Sold mine on the net and even told them it was noisier and got e-mail back wanting to make it quitier. Guess us utility ATV guys aare going to have to put up with what the factory sends with thier machines.

We're all looking for the magic bullet. I've got an H.O. with AAEN long duration cam, K&N, and I've just changed tailpipes, to 1.5", and done some internal modifications on my stock H.O. muffler. And I've messed with the airbox.
I've been doing speed runs including a long incline. Top speed is still 62 mph, the only thing that lowered top speed, to 58mph, was the AAEN megaphone muffler with the Supertrapp Spark
Arrestor. But the latest incline test held 55 mph
decreasing to 50 mph at the top of this hill. Stock H.O. hits 40 at the top of the hill from 50
at the bottom.
But let me make a point, we havn't found the magic bullet. I think it may be the carb.
The Keihin Constant Velocity carb doesn't open up
when you hit the throttle, it only allows the throttle to open up. The engine vacuum opens the throttle slide only as fast as the vacuum pulls it open. The bigger the cam, the slower the low speed vacuum and the constant velocity carb kills the big cam. Why else is
all this stuff not working?
A stock late 2000 SP is 99% as fast as an H.O.is as fast as an H.O. with the cam etc. There is a
weak link, a clog in the pipe, a glitch.
AAen sells Mikuni
Flat slide racing carbs with instant, mechanical
slides that, jetted correctly, give instant mechanical throttle response.
Putting it all together is what fine-tuning and performance is all about.
Here's where Electronic Fuel Injection, a la
Cannondale, would be ideal. Plus for riding at different elevations, like we do here alot.
Unless of course they put a "don't ride too fast"
program in the computer controlling the fuel injection. oops, did I say something I shouldn't have?????/ Silly Later,,,,Fourlix
