Default please help me fix my awd!

2002 sportsman 700
something happened with the awd. it doesnt work anymore, but i did mess with everything i could on the trail to try and restore it, and found a way to get it to work.

i think my problem lies in the lil black box on the side of the tranny. it has a harness, and sends info to the cluster to notify what gear you are in.

if this harness is plugged in, it will read H L N R P just fine, but no awd.
i ended up unplugging the harness, now it just reads "E" all the time, in any gear.
with the reverse override button pushed in, and the transmission harness unplugged, awd works like a champ.

is this lil black box defective, or do i have a wiring gremlin elsewhere? times are tough financially, and i really dont need to spend 70 bucks on a part thats not going to fix the issue.
im trying to sell the bike and have turned away numorous buyers because of this.

if there is any test procedure, or testing of this switch, any info is greatly appreciated.
thanks!

You are correct if the gear indicator switch is faulty the AWdrive will not work. I had the same problem with my 500 and it was the switch........

im suprised that the override works though w/ the switch unplugged though as it needs the tran switch to tell it what gear your in.

i really didnt think it would work, but i figured the override must be some kind of ground.
it worked.
ill bite the bullet on a switch. id really like to move this thing and its a good selling point for everything to work.
