Place shifter in neutral, loosen lock nuts on both hi-n-r and low linkage. Disconnect at shifter assy, both shifter tabs should be even and check that shifter goes through all shifting patterns including low!.Adjust linkage to where tip of ball slips STRAIGHT down on shift lever hole on both linkage arms with NO resistance or pulling. Tighten all lock nuts, should have low range, if problems check trans belcranks, or shifter assy may need rebuild. Good luck

well...I played with it lastnight and the shifter/shifter assembly has no problem going in/out of all 3 options when the linkage rods are disconnected. I tried to manaully shift the trans into low with nothing attached and it is stuck in one position......does that mean the internals in my trans are hosed? Where do I go next? thanks

Have only had to tear into a couple sportsman trannies over the years, usually bulletproof! Are linkage ***** loose, worn, do trans shafts feel sloppy and loose? Have had more problems with older shifter assemblies than transmissions themselves! But as the old saying goes IF IT HAS WHEELS OR T**S YOU WILL HAVE TROUBLE WITH IT! KEEP trying, Good luck
