Default Crashing the X2 700

Sadly, less than 2 weeks after I got my '08 700 X2 my oldest son (a 26 year computer engineer) crashed it pretty good. He was riding up the bank and turn back to go down when the top wheel hooked on the top of the dirt bank. It sent him off the bike (thankfully, he wasn't hurt much more than a concussion) and sent the bike tumbling. So ... I thought I'd post a few comments on what to expect if your X2 goes tumbling.

Normally I buy insurance on these kind of things at the time of the purchase, but a little glitch prevented me from pulling the trigger. So I had no insurance, and was my wallet worried. So far I've spent $875 for parts alone and I'm doing all the work myself.

So, here's a few things I've learned about wrecking my first X2 700 ... take them for what they are worth.

1. As with most ATVs today the fenders are all plastic and will bend a lot but they will also break fairly quickly. Fortunately they are also fairly inexpensive, running between $40 and $140 for the fender, depending on size and setup. It wasn't the fenders that were the big problems, though.

2. The Frame of the X2 is awesome!! When I first saw the bike laid on its side I just knew that it was totaled, but the majority of damage was cosmetic. The rear box (dump box) was tore completely lose, the front box was dangling by one pin, and the passenger seat was flopping around under the bike. But once I settled down and really looked I could see the frame was in good shape. Good work Polaris!

3. A-Arms can be replaced fairly easily, even by a dunderhead mechanic like me. Took me about 40 minutes to replace the front left (driver's side) A-Arm, which included the lube job. Cost was not too bad, either. The A-Arm itself is uner $70. Of course, my guess is that lots of A-Arms get toasted on all kinds of ATVs, so I'm not going to consider the X2 A-Arm an issue any bigger than that for any other Quad.

4. Now the expensive stuff. The front box has two major (expensive) parts. The box itself is plastic and fits fairly well into the front right over the wheels. Design is good, and replacing it is really a short time job. Problem is that the part is expensive ($206 MSRP) and the cover adds to the price. The cover will run you another $130, so the full unit is almost $350. If you screw up the front bumber than you should add another $112, so just the plastic parts on the front end will be close to $500, and that's just for parts.

5. The back box (dump box) is worse. The dump box itself is plastic and easy to replace, once you get all the extra stuff off. But the dump box by itself will cost you $250 or more. And if you're unfortunate enough to have twisted the frame underneath (or just the box frame that dumps) then you'll spend another $625+ for the dump box frame.

Since I've not worked on the engine or Tranny I haven't had to do anything that was overly complicated. I can do basic wrenching pretty well, and this job has not been that bad. The biggest issue is just keeping all the tiny screws and extra parts together while you're taking the first part apart. Fortunately, for me anyway, I've been able to salvage a lot of small parts off the bike so I had to only buy the main items. As I said, so far the parts have cost me around $850 and about 60 hours of work (I work slow). All told, though, I'll put the final touches on the bike tomorrow and be ready for a ride on Saturday. It looks almost brand new, so I'm happy with the work. A big thanks to Polaris for such fine engineering and manufacturing.

World's toughest ATVs sounds pretty accurate. I've had small issues with the plastics, but other than that it's holding up very well to my abuse. Hope everything gets straightened out okay. You might try eBay if you have the time to wait for parts. I've gotten some good deals.

Sorry to hear about your misfortunes. But, thanks for sharing it. That would not be easy for me to do. I was more into learning how to prevent this from happening to me. I wish you all the best in your future rides!

I have to admit that I've made 2 mistakes in my life and I didn't learn from the first one or either one.
Letting someone use my atv.
never ever ever again.
Short stories,
1st friend of the family drove it like he stole it and broke the entire front A frame off and rolled it. Ended up with a broken hand. No lawsuit. He paid for parts and i fixed it. yay
2nd friend of my daughter rolled atv. Nothing too serious but also ended up with broken hand and no lawsuit. yay
Hope i didn't get off topic ,doc but you sure brought back some memories.

I would like to comment on the fact that polaris quit makeing the fenders separate. I don't know how some of you feel about that but I think that was dumb. I have an 05 Sportsman and if I crack a fender I can take it off and just get another.
