Default Rebuilding my 1986 250 polaris trail boss

I have just put my new top end back together and all seems to OK. Where I am having trouble is the fuel (I think). I have taken the carb apart several times and have cleaned it. I have new gas and new oil.

here is what is happening. If I use quick start and get the atv running I can keep it running if I keep it revved up. As soon as I let the throttle go it dies. I can not get the bike started without the quick start I have tried everything I have tried just holding the throttle open a little adjusting the mixture screw, idle screw ????

Any suggestions would be appreciated

Just rebuilt top end? compression must be over 100 psi, did you replace crank seals on this 22 year old machine,If not probably leaking and can cause symptoms as you described! Must have bottom end compression also,as seals allow pressurization of fuel, oil, air mixture up through transfer ports to top of piston for fire. Also is pilot and main jet open and clean, needle and seat replaced? Idle screw on carb adjusted? Just several of things that possibly can be the problem! Good luck

As indicated I think I have cleaned the carb thoroughly. I have set the idle screw as per manual. Is it difficult to change the crank seals, Do i have to take the motor apart again or can I change the seals while the lower end is on the bike?

Thanks

did you check to make sure you had at leaste 100 psi compression? did you make sure to hook the vacume line back up? is the float bowl filling up w/ gas w/ the proper settings?

Crank seals a little time consuming if this is your problem and carb is clean and compression good, but you can do it. Clutches have to be pulled, also flywheel and stator, use seal puller or small screw in seal to pop out. If original seals, replacements will be different. Old style seal especially on clutch side were metal bodied, improved seals over the years. Hope this helps. Good luck

Ok folks I tinkered a bit more with the adjustments on my carb. I am now able to start it with out the quick start. What I have now is; starts if I give the throttle 1 full pump. runs at idle seems a little high but definitely better than yesterday. I was able to take it for a little spin (a long way from the basket case I had when i got it). When idling even though a little high it seems fairly smooth. With all this being said can I assume the crank seals are ok?

If it idles and doesnt die,not erratic idling, then would ASSUME seals holding. But like the old saying ASSUME Can make an *** out of U and ME! Good luck
