86 Trailboss won't rev up

I just cleaned up my 86 250 Trailboss that had been sitting for a couple years. It ran great when it was parked. I put an oil pump on it because it had been plugged and was using mixed gas. I cleaned the gas tank and carb and it fired right up and idles good. When you give it gas it throttles up good to about half throttle then it seems to bog down and won't run as fast as it should. Any ideas?

I'm not familiar with an 86 model. Does it have a Reverse Speed Limiter on it like later models? If it does, it should have a button on the left hand control that says "override" Press the button in and if it revs up, then you will have to make a shifter linkage adjustment (because it may think it is in reverse) or replace the limiter switch.

My 97 trail boss had the same symptoms. I pressed in the Override button and it revved fine. I had to adjust the shift linkage and it's ran fine ever since.

I cleaned the carb and adjusted it as directed in my Haynes manual. It does have a reverse speed limiter and I will give that a try.

Probably not the ETC making it do that, but just in case, make sure the throttle has 1/16" - 1/8" slack.
