Never had an ATV before
Looked at a used Polaris Sportsman today - 1999, 4k miles, 400 hours, looked and rode pretty good.
He wants $3k.
Is this a reasonable price?
What tends to break at this usage and how much to fix?
Is there a better age and price point to get in?

With a few exceptions, I think there is a general consensous that 2001 and newer is a better age to concider...there are some good older bikes out there but many improvements/options started showng up around this time frame

You hit the nail right on the head Jokout. The 2001 and up Sportsman 500s steer so much easier it feels like power steering compared to the 2000 and earlier. I would never buy one older than an '01 unless I was really desperate. A '99 Sp500 is only worth $2,105 on average and as low as $1,600 according to NADA so that one is WAY overpriced. Run, don't walk, away from that deal.
