Running in New08 500 X2
#1
Hi Guys,
Well, just picked up the X2 500 yesterday and I'm very happy with it! So is the family, so much so I might have to hide the key or else I won't get to ride it....
Sorry for the lenght of this post, but I do have a few questions on running it in!!!
What is the best way to run it in? dealer was not very helpful. (Ok, in my exitement I forgot to ask)
The dealer said 50 hours before first service or two months... I did see something on this group that suggested 25 hours? thoughts?
The dealer also made it sound quite hard to do an oil change cause of the dry sump setup. I've never done an oil change on this sort of quad, but I do service the rest of my equiptment... Sould I send it back to the dealer,or is it not as hard as it souonds?
Why do the low beam lights go off when you switch it on high? If you have something on the front rack how do I use high beam? is there a fix?
and while I'm on lights... my X2 is the standard one with the worklights not working... Whats the go to get them working?
Do you need to be stopped before switching to AWD? or Low and High?
How can you tell what temp they are running at? is there a warning light?
I'm sure I'll have a few more questions later....
Thnaks in advance,
Steve

I just wanted to start off by saying, CONGRATULATIONS! The worklight switch is easy. You'll have to, well you don't have to, get a toggle switch from the dealer. But it is easy. You'll need to do a break-in oil change at around 10 hours or so. If you've got time there's tons of info doing searches on here. But everyone is very helpful too.

Congrats! Just got a 2008 800 X2 LE and after 60 miles it still has that new bike BURNING smell. I just have to ride it more, yeah, that's the answer. So far as oil changes, I would change at 15-20 hours first time, then at 50 and AT LEAST at every 50 thereafter. Can't change too often.
You should go to the quadovator.com site for the stuff the complete the little things that Polaris didn't. They have the switches pre-wired and other stuff to make the bike work better . I have most of them and will be installing next weekend. The kits are simple and instructions good. My bike is black and I peeled every label off of it and then cleaned it with GOOF-OFF. NOW it looks classy.
To break in the engine, avoid running at the same speed for any period of time. Vary the speed, and keep it mellow, but wind it up occasionally.
ENJOY!

for the 3 light mod you can get one from quadovator for $15 or get one off ebay for $4
and never switch from high to low or low to high while moving, also never switch in or out of awd while moving
for the rear worklights you can just go to your local parts store and get 2 912 or 921 peanut style bulbs, (921 are brighter) and buy a switch of your choice
also heres a nice video of the oil change deal
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4sn-mpKlp8o
check out that guys other videos too
there's no temp gauge, but there is a light that says HOT that comes on
good luck on your new bike

Thanks Guys,
Those vids on youtube were very good, some good info..
After seeing the paper air filter, i'm going out to buy a spare tomorrow....
I still don't get the high beam low beam thing. It seems crazy.... But I'll buy that mod I think sounds easy to install.

223....... I have the 08 700 X2 and I did do the oil change at 20 Hrs and and will do it every 50 hrs now. all I use is pure polaris oils and filters Y? just not worth the little money you will save using other brands. the only thing I would get outside of polaris is a Wix's brand oil filter from napa. noththing but good things said about them on this forum.....good luck, on the light mod for both high and low at the same time remember if you ride in a dusty area high beam sucks just like riding in the fog in your car with the highs on but I think the mod will let you use the 2 low beams and when you switch to high all 3 lights will be on.I have not done the mod for this or the work lights. Oh doen't forget to greas it.

If you're stuck in a mudhole in 4x2 and spinning the wheels, wait until they stop spinning, then switch it to 4x4. But if you're just driving down the trail you can switch it on before you even get to that mudhole. You can switch 4x4 on or off at ANY speed. Just don't switch in on when the rear wheels have lost traction.
If you have any other questions just ask. Most of the answers are in the owner's manual too.
