Welcome to the forum. The 400 2x4 Scrambler/Sport/Trailblazers are one of the quickest quads Polaris ever made. The 500 H.O has the same horsepower but it takes 4-strokes longer to wind up. The 500 is a very good engine. Everyone says the 400s break piston skirts, but a new piston makes that a great engine too. I copied this from NADA:
2000 POLARIS 4 Wheel ATV SCRAMBLER 400 2X4 Average Retail $1,700.
2000 POLARIS 4 Wheel ATV SCRAMBLER 400 4X4 Average Retail $1,950.
2000 POLARIS 4 Wheel ATV SCRAMBLER 500 4X4 Average Retail $2,130.
You can look up other years and models here: http://www.nadaguides.com/defa...5692&gc=MC>c=MC&ml=P

The 400-500 question is whether you like a quick 2stroke or a torquey 4stroke.A 400 WILL need a topend every few yrs but that will only cost a couple hundered $$$$ and once you get a Wiesco piston in it you wont have to worry about breaking a skirt.Plus the 400 is fairly cheap to mod for more power and the power is only limited by your pocket.
The 500 on the other hand is a very good powerplant and will go for many yrs before needing to rebuild but when you do have to rebuld it is very costly. There is also a limited amount of mods and power that you can get.
I personally haVE HAD BOTH AND LOVED THEM BOTH BUT IN DIFFERANT SITUATIONS.
400s are great in sand, fast trails and open roads.500s are best in tight trails, hills and rouch technical situations

Say away from 99 and less they had u joints not CVs. The rest is condition ,I would pay more for a 2000 than a 2005 if it has less miles and a better previous owner.

All the 400 Scrammys are 2-strokes and as long as you keep the air filter clean they run good for a long time. The only thing you probably need to do is get a piston won't break, like a Wiesco.

oh that is wat i was thinkin... i guess im leanin towards the 500 then cus i really dont know how to take care of a 2 stroke...

IMO 4-strokes take a lot more abuse like dirty air filters and bad gas. But there are more parts so if you do damage the engine it will cost more to re-build. I've never had one that needed to be re-built even after several years and thousands of miles, so I'm not worried about that. 2-strokes are lighter and more powerful for their size, so they're good for weed-whackers and chainsaws, but 4-strokes are better in most ways for vehicles.

lol i was with u till " so they're good for weed-whackers and chainsaws," wats that mean?... but i am lookin at a 4 stroke its a 2001 polaris scrambler 500 2x4

Stuff like that needs a small powerful motor, but they aren't built to last. They're good for ocassional use but not everyday use. Car engines are 4-strokes mostly because you can run them every day. They're more durable, but heavy.
