i might trade an 02 kawi bayou 220 for a 96 trail boss 250 and was wondering if there pretty decent quads and whether there a money pit or not when things start breaking, we might trade becuase girlfriend wants an automatic, the guy says elec start doesnt work but has new battery and that it runs good. heres the info on it, thanks. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...8089&_trksid=p3907.m29

STAY AWAY FROM POLARIS!!!!! Constant repair !!!!!! the first time you hit a puddle youll regret ever thinking about polaris.Since they run on a jack shaft clutch system which requires a belt, when it gets wet you just sit, reving the motor till the belt desides to catch again.I have A polaris and it it will be my last.Im going to yamaha. Its what my friends ride while Im stuck at home in the garage working on my polaris.

Ignore the above post. He has a 22 year old Polaris. I don't know how many people have done what to it in 22 years but I got my first Polaris in '97 and don't think anyone builds a better quad. that's all I buy. Both of my friends with Grizzlys have way more maintenance issues than I do, including a broken frame.

Ignore the above post or it will self destruct in 5 seconds!!!!!!!!! No matter what its still a belt drive, ultimately youl do what keeps your girlfriend happy anyway,We all do!!!!!! Gears and Chains may break but they dont slip in water,This holds true no matter what your opinion.Just make sure the clutch cover is water tight before you buy it!!!!

I'll tell you what I have been mudding since I was 4 yrs old and My dad bought 1 new quad which was a Polaris 1988 Trailboss 250 4x4 and It was passed down to me and I wouldn't buy a new 4x4 for anything. Sure they make like ungodly hp now and yeah fourstrokes are unbeatable in the mud because of the torque. But I just recently restored mine with a 2inch home made lift and I had some spacers made to fit a 4x110 mm lug pattern so I can have virtually any wheels I want and my 250 TB is a beast. Ill try to post pics in a lil bit. I dunno ppl say they suck for belt slipping. Well then silicone all seals that lead to the belt and clutch cover. Nahh but my buddy went and bought an 08 Kawasaki Brute force 650 and I have to pull him out of the mudd all day even with 28" tires. Anyway I mentioned I had the wheel spacers made well that was because I was given for free a set of Mudlite 26" tires and ITP wheels so now my bike went from stock 22" tires to 26" and what a difference.

Nice pic. It looks like you could drive right over it.
I've had my Polaris ATVs in mud and water up to the top of the racks without the belt slipping. But I wasn't riding any 22 year old antiques. I guess that makes a difference.
Belts can break if you abuse them but so can gears and chains. It's a lot easier and cheaper to replace a belt than it is a gear-driven transmission. Belts never need oil and don't rust or lose teeth. If belt-drive CVTs were a bad idea then millions of ATVs from several different companies wouldn't have them.

The 250 is a great machine but I would look for a 325 or 330 Trailboss.Newer and less chance they are totally wore out.
The belt system is great and water is no problem if you dont blast through it and have no leaks in the cover
