Old Story: New Inquiry
#1
I have the click when I hit the starter button. This started right after I changed out the battery. I read "old polaris tech" to "kukerdan" on his 96 scramber 400. Remove recoil and two bolts, stand on tail end, remove skid plate, remove bracket ( with hard to get back screws) and starter. I would like to assume that this the same technique I need to do. I do have a lift, but no clutch tools.
First thing, I will check the electrical. What is the odds that it is the starter? Reasoning that I should go ahead and buy one. Also, I see some companies will sell me the starter drive and the starter for less than a $100. How often does the starter drive go bad?
The ATV is not with me. I only see it on weekends and that is the only time I can work on it; plus a million other things that I have to do.
I don't have much time and I want to save as much time as I can. The ATV is almost 10 years old. Should I just go ahead and buy one anyway and if so, what else should I buy to replace while I have this off?
I am getting an engine miss on initial acceleration. Could this be the stator? I have changed the plug and filters but no luck
Thanks for your input
PS
Jumbo Frank- sorry for your lose.

if its not the starter , its the relay, or a dead battery. or a bad wire somewhere
check wiring first..
the bendix goes bad to (the starter drive)
somtimes youll open them up and find a quart of water in there!
replace both, my bendix was ROTTTTTTEN and my starter is too, got the starter for 50 on ebay, new, looks like a quality piece.
get the gasket too.. cheapcycleparts.com

Jump across solenoid posts to see if starter works. If not usually starter and as posted above sometimes bendix needs replacement also if bad! 250,300,350 and 400 starters on bottom of engine and notorious for going out. Engine miss can be carb related, check out also. Good luck

Well, it was the starter. The apprehension was more than that actual job. Nine bolts on the recoil starter. Had to reefer the bottom left as it was twice as long and wanted to hit the drive shaft coming out and going back in. Two bolts inside and 2 bolts underneath. It really was not a bad job at all. Thanks to those who gave me input. Still don't know why some take off the airbox. Doing that gave me no advantage at all. Again
