oil question
#2
Pour in 1 3/4 quarts in tank,IF worried,Just clamp off vent line at TOP of oil tank about 1 inch out,let run for couple minutes at idle, release pliers/clamp from hose, check oil on dipstick(screwed all the way in) Top off to full mark. SHOULD take right at two quarts. Only time I prime(clamp off vent line) is when I clean screen on oil tank. I dont clean screens religiously, only on machines THAT I KNOW have not been given REGULAR service. SLIGHT difference in capacity of metal oil tanks versus plastic tanks, thats why I dont just dump in 2 quarts.

I am switching out my plastic tank w/ a metal one because the plug stripped out. The dipstick location is a little different but all the mounts are the some. Do the metal tanks hold more oil, and how often should I service my machine?

I do oil changes from a 2 quart jug I pump from our shops 55 gallon drum of PS4 Plus. Most of the time, metal tanks hold exactly 2 quarts with sump drained, and the plastic tanks almost always just a tad bit less!,BUT both are supposed to hold 2 quarts. AS LONG as you are between the low and high mark on dipstick its ok! I recommend at least twice yearly oil changes and an annual service of ALL fluids. A lot depends if pleasure or business/farm ranch use. On the heavy use machines I recommend 50 hrs,but I KNOW that comes quick on these machines and usually depends on owner as to when they service. Have had a few that didnt realize 2 quarts is cheap insurance compared to ground down cam lobes! Just use common sense on your service and 500 engine should last a long time. Good luck

I changed the oil and filter, I found 0w-40 oil at oreillys it was royal purple band synthetic. It's a little cheaper than the polaris oil. The machine is still smoking, i did not run it long. I didn't want to mess it up even more. I reckon i'll have to rebuild the engine now.

I've got a 2001 500HO with 2500 miles on it that I clean the screen on everytime I change oil, usually once a year. I've never done that priming thing. Why do you do that? It's not mentioned in the manual.
That being said, the only time I ever found debris in the screen was as a few metal shavings the first time I changed it.
The thing runs just as good as the day I bought it.

The machine runs like a top, it just smokes. It's been sitting for the last month or so b/c the water pump seal was leaking. Well after I got the seal replaced and started it up it was smoking. It has never ran hot. I had put 10w-40 in it and some folks said that may have been the problem, so I changed the oil and filter w/ the 0w-40. Now it is still smoking.
