Default Polaris 700 2003

Hey
I have a 2003 Sportsman 700 and this season it will hardly go into high gear. Do I need to release the arm and put in neutral and reset the rod. Am I on the right track?
2nd issue is when in reverse it sputters and bogs down,no power loss of throttle. I hit the limiter button and it works ok but will still try to bog down. The dealership is a mess and they tried to fix it.Said it was a jetting problem.I am lost.
I am also getting errors (letter E) in my lcd display for my gear selection. On some good deer and need to get up the mountains.
Great forum with lots of knowledge.I appreciate your help and guidance.

first question is it idling too high and wont let it come out/in to gear. if it doesnt run like crap in forward as well as reverse then it wouldnt be the jetting. imo.

Is it creeping while idling? If so it may be the one way clutch on the primary clutch. It is basically a roller that the belt rides on to allow you to stop without taking it out of gear. It is called the one way clutch because it has one way rollers in it that allows the motor to slow the wheels down. When my bike was creeping that is what the polaris dealer told me it was. I pulled the the clutch and found that the one way clutch was working properly. I noticed that the belt was looking really wore out(stock belt 2000 miles). The inside of the belt was worn down about 1/8th of an inch. This allowed the belt to sit lower in the clutch. When it did this, the top(widest part) of the belt was touching the clutch at idle. When I replaced the belt, my problems stopped. Before this I had to turn off the bike to put it in high. As for your bad idle in reverse, mine did the same thing. As I understand, the bike should go in reverse no faster than 5mph until you hit the override button. From what you are saying it won't even move in reverse unless you hit the button. It probably just sits there and spits and sputters. It is an electrical issue that I believe starts in the speedo. When my speedo bit the dust, I had no more problems in reverse. Idles and performs the same in reverse as in forward. CAUTION if you do away with the reverse saftey mech, and you stand up in reverse and punch it, you WILL go over the handlebars. (did it last night) Ouch!

Do you have the owners manual that came with the quad if so it shows all the screen displays an {E} mean you have a software. You can see this by.Turning the key switch off and wait 20 seconds (2)set the barke and shift the transmission in neutral {3}hold the mode/reverse override button as you turn the key on.And on my 02 700 you must push down the foot brake to shift into high gear...........

Wow great responses. The shifter first.Yes I push down on the engine brake to shift into high.It feels like there is not much brake there though.I have only used the foot brake to shift and not as an actual brake.
In reverse it does cough and sputter.I hit the over ride button and it works good.
The bike idles well and does not creep when in gear.
I have the manual and will try to run the diagnosis on my error light staying on..
I am starting to think it may be my engine brake not engaging to letting me shift into high? It does shift to reverse though.
When new the speedometer quit working so that could be my error light on all the time. This old bike still runs over every other in the club.

Yep this is the second Polaris I have owned.I used to have a 2 cycle 350 sportsman that was a blast. It was so light I loved breaking it loose with that old chain drive. The newer 700 is ok but am seeing mech difficulties and around here we do not have any good service dealers ect.
I will see what people here like you say and go from there. Thanks !
