I'm in the market for a used utility Polaris and was wondering what kind of mods can be done to beat a scrambler.

Also what polaris machine would be best for the job.

Hey Xpress300~
Your best chance of beating a Scrambler would be with an Explorer 400. They have the same engine as the 400 scrambler, but carrying around about 70 more pounds. Put a pipe and clutch kit on the Explorer and you should be just as fast, if not faster than either scrambler. The Explorer is the fastest Utility machine available...I have seen it beat SP500HO's a couple times.

Xpress3002x4,

What exactly do you have in mind? Are you in the market for a utility Polaris, but wanting to shut a loud-mouthed Scrambler riding buddy up? About the only way I think you're going to beat a 400 Scrambler is if you do some good mods, and that egg-beater stays stock. Not trying to rattle your cage, just seems an odd enough question to get my curiousity going.

AKScrambler,

What wheel studs are you running up front?

I ASSUME the Scrambler has the same 4-156mm bolt circle hubs in front as the Sportsman?

What Im getting at, is mine are too short. They work, but as a mechanic, i know it is not right, and it bothers me. I haven't been able to find anything longer.

Xpress, if you want a kick *** utility, go for the HO! The 400 2 stroke has *****, but Id rather have the 500 4 stroke HO for quietness, longevity, etc.

As the previous owner of a 99 Sportsman and now a Xplorer 400cc,its my opionion that the 2 stroker is just as quite as the Sportsman. So if your buying the Sportsman for its quitness, forget it,its no quiter than the Xplorer.

As for longivity,my Xplorer has around 1200 miles of ENGINE free trouble,on the other hand,my Sportsman had to have the engine rebuilt at 900 miles.Needless to say,im not real impressed with MY Sportsmans longivity!

And even if the Xporer ever needs to be rebuilt it, just a matter of going one size over piston and new wrist pin ,gaskets, and rings. In my dirt bike days a blow 2 stoke was lucky to hold you up for the afternoon and was inexspensive.I do not think I would try taking my 4 stroke apart with cams, values and push rods falling on the garage floor.

Get the xplorer 400. I have beaten 2 stock scrambler 400's on my xplorer. If they have a pipe or clutch kit, forget it. It's a close race but the xplorer will lose because of the weight. My xplorer is more reliable than any of my other machines. I've had it for about a year with 600 miles on it and no probs at all. I only use it for mud riding. Mud is one of the hardest things on a quad. So I believe that it passes the test.

I'm running the stock studs. They are just a bit short, but I've had no problems. Just be sure to check them now and then. There were other posts about this topic a couple months back. You might be able to research them. Sorry I wasn't much help.
