1998 Polaris 400 2 stroke won't start (no spark)

Could not find the plug wire and cap tonight, and NAPA was closed. I will try tomorrow. Does anyone know the resistance specs for the coil, CDI, and stator pick up? How to test each one? Thanks, guys!

Local ATV shop only sells the wire and cap with a coil. Geeez! I guess eBay it is. I will try the new boot and wire sometime soon. Does the coil use a screw to connect to the wire, like the cap? Which wires do I need to ohm to test the pick up and coil? I guess the carb could use a rebuild while I am at it, huh? I'll have to order a kit for that, too.

usually a carb just needs a real good cleaning. only needs a rebuild kit of gaskets and o rings are ate up. all of the parts are made of brass so there is very little wear and tear on a carb.
im just kinda comparing various 2 stroke motor wiring diagrams and it looks like a white/red wire and a white wire come from the stator plate to the cdi. those are the pickup coil wires. and from the cdi to the coil is a black and yellow. dont know if this is correct for your machine but should atleast give you some hints..maybe somebody with the diagram with that machine will chime in

That helps. I believe I have read those colors belong to those parts before. I tested my coil with the old screwdriver method, and I have fire from the coil. I could not find a plug boot at Advance, TSC, or NAPA. Guess I gotta find one online, now.

All right, it starts! I cut a new piece of spark plug wire and screwed it under the little cap on the spark plug, gave it a shot of ether, and it fired up briefly. The carb is all gummed up, and I have it in pieces on the work bench in carb cleaner. I say a new plug cap, fresh oil and gas, and it will be ready to ride. being a 2 stroke I assume there is no crankcase oil? What about transmission fluid? I want to do all of the maintenance items while I have everything torn apart. Thanks, again!

Agl trans fluid, keep air filter clean along with foam prefilter, under carb small dipstick(30 weight oil for counter balancer, about 75-100 cc) TCW3 rated injector oil(wallyworld 2-stroke just as good as any brand) keep chain adjusted and lubed. IF narrowed down to carb JUST replace needle valve assy, clean pilot and main jet, blow out,CHECK air box neck for cracks(repair(JB weld?) or replace. CHECK oil pump body at front for corrosion, premix first tank of gas 50-1 with the injector oil to be safe! Then just ride!

Is there a drain for the counter balancer oil? Where? AGL such as http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/agl.aspx ?

Can drain counter balancer at bottom of engine,10 mm drain screw OR at front right of engine has 14 mm bolt, remove can siphon out Most of fluid and refill there also. AGL recommended,BUT as long as it says for CHAIN CASE transmissions usually can use! The Amsoil you posted said "for applications calling for an 80-90 lube" Too thick for transmission,BUT I'm sure other members have used it! Use at your discretion. Good luck

I found the correct one. http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/tcc.aspx
