Has anybody figured out a feasable way to convert a Sman 500,700, or 800 to a LEGAL x2? Where would I find the definition/authority/state/local law/rationale etc. Dumb plus illegal is worse than just dumb. Thanks for your thoughts.

All X2's that I'm aware of have a longer wheel base so that would equal a longer frame. Not to mention the extra handles, foot rests, and back rest. If it's possible to convert one I have not seen or heard anything about it.
Would be kinda nice if they could be easily converted though.

I think the first thing you need to do is cut the frame in half and weld some extensions in it. That's something I would never be comfortable doing. The driveshaft, plastics, and wiring wouldn't fit anymore but you could buy more and splice it all together. It would probably be cheaper to trade it in than to do a conversion.

<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>Dumb plus illegal is worse than just dumb.</end quote></div> Yep, I agree with the others. It would be a really nightmare to do a conversion. The wheelbase is 7" longer than the regular Sportsman. So, frame, wiring to the rear, footwells, plastic side panels, brake lines, etc. would have to be longer too. And it still probably would end up costing you more than a trade in and buying new one. I just replaced the bed after a small rollover. Over $400 in parts for 3 pieces of plastic.

Will vary state to state. In WI you can ride 2up. The DNR has authority over atvs in WI.

Your saying they'll let you ride 2up on any machine?.......cool.
I really don't like riding double but we have done it. It's not bad on groomed trails when you're just sight seeing.
I was watching ATV Illustrated yesterday and Wisconsin has some great looking riding areas! If they'll let me go 2up it would be a great chance to take the kiddo along (16 year old).
Sorry not trying to jack the thread.Back to you veryoldron.

Thanks all for your responses. I guess what I'm looking for is the "authority" for what constitutes a safe geometry. Maybe the number of 2 up accidents in the last ? years or how much does a ATV lobbyist in the given state/country donate? Why is " 2" longer wheelbase safe and not 1.5"? I thought it was a federal mandate, now I hear its state. Somebody on this board must have been ticketed or fined or punished by somebody for riding 2 up safely but illegally. What punishment and by whom? Fed, state, county, forest service. I asssume its ok on your own property or your friends property.
Sorry for the diatribe,,,I'm just curious...but I know that I'm dumb enough to ride just as unsafely on a long wheelbase as I am on my standard. Oldbut notwiserron
