driven clutch helix

was going to replace the buttons on my driven clutch and found that the helix is scored up where the buttons ride on it. is this normal because i pulled apart another clutch and it was the same way.

You can smooth it out a little and get by but it will eat your buttons faster.I would replace it with a stock one or you can get a teflon coated.

where would i get a teflon coated one?
i just dont understand how it can get scores in it like it is. they are no very light scores but if the plastic buttons can eat the aluminum like that, there has to be a design flaw somewhere.

Chances are that the plastic buttons did not do much of the eating. When the buttons wear down, The screws, etc. do the eating.
Have you owned the quad since new? If not, maybe the previous owner wore them down and replaced them once already...

no i havent had it since new but im pretty sure they havent been replaced before. the scoring goes all the way across the face of the helix not just in the 1/8" of space that the screw could come in contact with
what is the life expectancy of the plastic buttons?

The scoring goes across because the helix rotates as you accelerate. From what I've read, the buttons can last 1-2 years of fairly heavy use, or 3-5 years of light to medium use. I just replaced mine a month or 2 ago.

Take some emery paper and smooth out the scores , replace the buttons and ride it, check it out in six months and see how its doing, dont jump it and hit the ground with power to the wheels, thats the hardest on the buttons.
