Default Problem cleaning carburator

I am trying to get the carburator off a 2000 Sportsman 500. Got everything detatched from it except the choke cable, not sure how it detatches from the carburator. Also need some info on some do's and don'ts when cleaning. The problem I was having is the idle screw on carburator was not effecting idleing at all, also turning the choke on and off had no effect on motor. It was rough idleing as well. Thanks in advance

do check all settings before taking the pilot screw out stuff like that. do make sure you clean EVERYTHING very thoroughly including any hole you might see in the carb body.

dont loose nothing
dont forget how to put it back together

take everything off the mainbody of the carb and leave it soaking in a basket of a gallon of carburetor cleaner overnight. then get a can of carburetor spraY cleaner with a straw extension and spray through all the fuel and air passages. Then with an air compressor go through all the fuel and air passages again. Buy yourself a carb rebuild kit and install. it. That carb will be functioning better than new.

put all screw setting to factory specifications.......................

The choke is a plunger it just stuck and will pull out of the body on its own #45 (looks like a 46 ) just next to the spring #44.

Pic of a plunger.

Since it will not come out, you know its stuck and not sliding any longer which means you have no choke. Spay with wd 40 and let it sit and yank it out. than clean it up so it slides once more.

How to Disassembly and Cleaning of a Mikuni

Its a silde carb but the plunger choke is the same and cleaning of the main and pilot jets are the same.

If pilot jet will not come out just put the wire through where it stands and spray the carb cleaner to it.

Just a thought, were you turning the idle mixture screw or the idle speed screw? Be sure that you are adjusting the correct one!

The bigger of the two that you do not need a screwdriver for, I believe is was the idle speed screw. What excactly does the idle mixture screw do?
