Default Oil change question

Hey everyone, i had a quick oil change ??? for the pros. I figure old polaris tech will come to the rescue.

I went to do the first oil change today on my 08' 800 and I was wondering if the correct drain plug is a meteric allen head bolt ??? I didn't have anything to fit it so i wasn't able to check to see if that was it or change it for that matter. On my dads 08' 500, it's like a 9/16" bolt.

Thats OPT!

Well, i guess the next question is why does a "so called " american made machine have a metric allen bolt on it? and yes i realize that other than Great britian, Burma and Liberia we are the last holdouts waiting to fully change over to the world standard of the metric system.....

I have that very same thought. I know that some of my GM vehicles use metric sizes here and there. It sure makes it hard to work on something when you constantly having to switch between the two.

That's why it should be all metric. The English don't even use the English system so why should we? They went metric in the '70s. Liberia and Myanmar are the only people other than us who are too stupid to get with the worldwide standard. But all our doctors and scientists, and most engineers use metric. What a fuster-cluck.

Don't forget the washer when you reinstall the drain bolt. It's VERY important for proper sealing AND torquing.

6mm and 1/4 wrenchs are pretty much interchangeable....with that said I can't swear to that with a allen head. I think 1/4 is a tad bit larger so it may not fit so being the wrenches od is what is important.
Also 5/16 and 8mm, 7/16 and 11mm,9/16 and 14mm, 11/16 and 17mm, 3/4 and 19mm are all real close and in most instances either wil work...
Disclaimer..if the wrench has too much slop get the proper size so as not to strip the bolt/nut..but in experienced hands these sizes interchange in a pinch.

Hey SHEEPDOG...

Do i need to replace the nylon washer when i do it? I believe it says in the manual you should replace, NOT reuse?

I'm going to do it tomorrow morning before my dad and I do a little fall mountain riding... We went out yesterday for about 20mi total. Going to do about 35-40 tomorrow and yeah it's going to be cold!!!

Had to go out & but a 15mm socket for my chevy truck plug. The 24" pipe wrench was tearing up the head. I have never replaced the washer just make sure it is on.
